Is UK heading for NORWAY deal? What is the Norway model?

The British Government needs to explain how it intends to proceed with Brexit following the defeat of Theresa May's plan in the Commons, the EU's chief negotiator has said.

Voting against deal were Sir Amess MP for Southend West, James Duddridge MP for Rochford and Southend East, Mark Francois MP for Wickford and Rayleigh, Stephen Metcalfe MP for for South Basildon and East Thurrock and John Baron MP for Basildon and Billericay.

"That is why I believe that the people should be able to decide what the next steps are, whether that is the Prime Minister's deal, or the deal we now have". The defeat was the biggest government loss in a parliamentary vote in more than 100 years, according to the think tank Institute for Government.

After the results of the confidence vote were announced to cheers from Conservative politicians, Mrs May told the House of Commons that Parliament had a duty to find a solution that would deliver Brexit.

In a speech after the vote Mrs May invited party leaders to Downing Street for talks on Brexit next steps, adding that the meetings would begin this evening with Jeremy Corbyn.

Earlier, the prime minister won a vote of no confidence by 325 to 306, as rebel Tory MPs and the DUP backed her to stay in No 10.

She said: "It is hardly surprising that Parliament has overwhelmingly rejected the Prime Minister's Brexit plan".

Mrs May confirmed she wanted to meet MPs from across Parliament before returning to the Commons on Monday to make a fresh statement on the way forward on Brexit.

German Chancellor Merkel offered May some hope, saying "we still have time to negotiate but we're now waiting on what the prime minister proposes".

If she survives, however, May said she would follow a two-stage process to break the Brexit impasse.

Theresa May's deal, which she had agreed with European Union leaders, was voted down by a margin of 230 votes, the largest in any such vote in over a century.

"Or, she reaches out to Labour and goes for a softer Brexit than most Brexiteers would contemplate" - but which the European Union might accept, Bale said. They also restated that the Northern Ireland backstop is a temporary and emergency measure, only to be used in the absence of a future trade agreement. So unless someone extends the article 50 process in the meantime, it's hard to see how the United Kingdom doesn't simply crash out without a deal.

"I don't think the European Union is in any mood to change the Withdrawal Agreement significantly at all". "The key thing to be watching is what Parliament does next and what Labour does next", Ford said.

But the deal was doomed by deep opposition from both sides of the divide over U.K.'s place in the bloc.

Crucially, the ten MPs for the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist party, who also opposed the Brexit deal, ultimately all backed the prime minister.

The landslide vote against the Brexit deal was pure humiliation for a British leader who has spent the past two years trying to sell her vision of a divorce to a skeptical public, and her failure increased doubts about how or whether Britain will leave the European Union on March 29.

With her ruling Tory party severely divided, the Brexit deal can not pass the House of Commons without the support of some of Labour's 256 lawmakers.

It was the biggest defeat for a government in modern British history. A sudden shift to different rules after the March 29 Brexit would affect nearly every economic sector and possibly see the costs of everyday products in Britain rise, as well as create disruption at logistical hubs such as ports.

Around 45 of them gathered outside Parliament on Wednesday morning to display a banner reading: "Labour MPs, MEPs, conference and members agree - The people should have the final say". "What yesterday's vote showed is that the political conditions for the ratification of the withdrawal agreement are not yet there in London".

Tim Bale, professor of politics at Queen Mary University of London, said most leaders who had suffered a defeat on this scale would be "either resigning or looking to trash the deal that they'd got and do something utterly different".
