May says lawmakers opposing her deal may kill Brexit altogether

Pro-European Union demonstrators protest outside the Houses of Parliament in central London against the first vote today on a bill to end Britain's membership of the EU

Standing to speak directly after May, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the prime minister had suffered a "catastrophic defeat" and immediately tabled that motion of no confidence in her leadership.

Many opponents of Brexit hope May's defeat will ultimately lead to another referendum on European Union membership, though Brexiteers say that thwarting the will of the 17.4 million who voted for Brexit could radicalize much of the electorate.

The UK votes for Brexit in the European Union referendum by 51.9% to 48.1%, prompting then-prime minister David Cameron to resign and be replaced by Theresa May.

He told the Today programme: 'We have not had an approach from the Prime Minister to Jeremy Corbyn.

In a call with business leaders on Tuesday evening, Mr Hammond sought to reassure the business community that a "no-deal" Brexit could be avoided.

"The Tory party's botched deal will be rejected by parliament".

He once again pushed for a general election which would give a new government a mandate to break the deadlock in the Brexit talks.

"The most important issue facing us is that the government has lost the confidence of this House and this country".

If she fails to win the confidence vote, it could spark another general election - just 73 days before Britain is meant to leave the EU. The red lines Mrs May subsequently set made it impossible for her to get a deal that would bring her fractious party together, let alone reach out to her political opponents.

Mr Corbyn had announced a few days ago that should Mrs May lose the meaningful vote in Parliament, the no confidence motion would be proposed "soon".

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said that he was skeptical about the prospects of reopening negotiations: "I don't believe that any completely new solutions beyond those that we have already negotiated and agreed to will be put on the table".

Speaking during a marathon seven-hour debate with local officials in Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron said that "the first losers" in a no-deal Brexit "would be the British".

The government is forecast to lose the vote, with the main sticking point for some being the Northern Irish "backstop" which has been written into the withdrawal agreement.

With some pro-Remain MPs backing moves to take control of the parliamentary timetable if she is defeated, she warned any attempt by the House to thwart Brexit would be a "subversion of our democracy".

March 2, 2018 - Mrs May gives her second big Brexit speech, this time at Mansion House, outlining her "five tests" for the UK's future economic partnership with the EU.

Moments after the vote, European Council President Donald Tusk demanded the United Kingdom "clarify its intentions" on its plan "as soon as possible".

She barely survived a similar vote in 2016. The EU Parliament's Brexit co-ordinator Guy Verhofstadt said: "The UK Parliament has said what it doesn't want".

She has not garnered sufficient support for the deal, however, and not only the opposition parties but also backbenchers from her own Conservative Party have declared they would vote it down. A defeat on Tuesday would throw Brexit plans into disarray just weeks before the U.K.is due to leave the bloc on March 29.

"The economic damage which it will do to us will be enormous, so that the most vulnerable in our society will be those who suffer most as a outcome", Grieve said.
