Trump gives firm rebuke: 'I never worked for Russia'

President Donald Trump listens as he leads a roundtable discussion on border security with local leaders Friday Jan. 11 2019 in the Cabinet Room of the White House in Washington

He was referring to a New York Times report Friday night that law enforcement officials were so anxious about President Trump's behavior just days after he fired James Comey as FBI director that they launched an investigation into whether the president was working for Russian Federation against American interests.

Appearing Monday on Fox News Radio's "Brian Kilmeade Show", Dowd accused special counsel Robert Mueller, former FBI Director James Comey, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, and former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe of conspiring against the president.

"I think it's the most insulting thing I have ever been asked", Trump said.

Trump's admission in the days following that Comey's dismissal had to do with the Russian Federation investigation, which Comey was overseeing, raised suspicions in the FBI, the report said.

Trump has repeatedly withheld details of his conversations with Putin, according to current and former USA officials, a practice that has left officials blind to the dynamic between the two leaders and intensified questions within the administration over the president's actions.

In a phone interview Saturday night, the President was asked if he ever worked for Russian Federation after the Times reported the Federal Bureau of Investigation started the probe following the firing of James Comey.

That same day, during an interview with Fox News, Jeanine Pirro asked Trump: "Are you now or have you ever worked for Russia, Mr. President?" "I think it's the most insulting article I've ever had written, and if you read the article you see that they found absolutely nothing". "The idea that's contained in the New York Times story that President Trump was a threat to American national security is silly on its face and not worthy of a response", he concluded.

I know a lot of shows, when they find out it's going to be over, then characters are killed off or something like that. It's been successful not only on air but online, in syndication, internationally for ABC [Studios] ...

In their message to Trump, the chairmen of the Intelligence, Judiciary and Oversight committees say: "Our nation's laws prohibit efforts to discourage, intimidate, or otherwise pressure a witness not to provide testimony to Congress".

Dershowitz argued it was not up to Mueller or any other prosecutor to take over the investigation into Trump himself, as it was not a "criminal investigation" meant to be used for filing charges.

Comey's firing and Trump's remarks shortly after were the catalyst for the counterintelligence investigation, The Times reported.

The meeting, which came in addition to a public sit-down between the two world leaders, was not reported at the time and only acknowledged by the White House a week later. "You never know what an investigation could unearth, even in the ninth inning".

"The people doing that investigation were people that have been caught that are known scoundrels there", Trump said.

Trump has repeatedly denounced the Mueller investigation as a "witch hunt", denying any collusion with Russia's attempt to sway the 2016 election.

Missing from Engel's statement, however, was the fact that after two years of investigations by both US Special Counsel Robert Mueller and the FBI, there is still no actual evidence that the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation to win the election, despite "Russiagate" faithfuls being convinced that a silver bullet is on the way.
