Jayme Closs case: Suspect saw parents as 'barrier' to kidnapping

Jake Thomas Patterson

He had dressed in a black jacket and black mask, shaving his face and head to avoiding leaving any physical traces at the scene. It says he took the license plates off his vehicle, put stolen plates on and disconnected the dome and trunk lights.

That led to an intense search that ended on Thursday when she was found alive 70 miles from her home.

Records show that defendant Jake Thomas Patterson's father transferred the title of the cabin near Gordon to Superior Choice Credit Union on October 23, eight days after the October 15 attack at the Closs family's home near Barron, which is about 60 miles (100 kilometers) south of Gordon.

He drove Jayme to his residence thereafter and kept her hidden for almost three months. He allegedly told investigators "when he saw [Jayme], he knew that was the girl he was going to take".

Police arrived to find the door kicked in, Jayme missing and her parents dead. They heard a gunshot and knew Patterson had killed her father.

A Wisconsin man admitted he kidnapped a 13-year-old girl he picked out at random after seeing her board a school bus and held her hostage for three months after killing her parents in their home, according to prosecutors.

The family have racked their brains trying to figure out if there was any connection between Jake Thomas Patterson and the teenager ahead of the crime, but are at a loss.

Barron County Sheriff Christopher Fitzgerald said he does not believe her kidnapper took her across state lines.

Patterson, who is unemployed, was not on the radar of investigators and had no criminal history in Wisconsin, authorities have said. The complaint does not charge Patterson with any form of sexual assault. Jayme's parents were shot to death and the teenager vanished the same day.

Jayme said Patterson pushed totes around the bed and held them in place with weights.

Ownership of a remote cabin where a Wisconsin teenager was apparently held during a almost 3-month disappearance passed to a credit union soon after the girl's abduction. I'll never, ever forget her screaming, "Sue! Sue!" He says Jayme showed him the room where she is staying with an aunt in Barron, Wisconsin.

'It's gonna take time. and if she doesn't want to talk then I think that's her complete prerogative'.

‘There Is No Going Back’: Elizabeth Smart Offers Advice To Jayme Closs
He was scheduled for an initial court appearance Monday. "The suspect was not at home when Jayme escaped". For months, thousands of people joined search parties as investigators received thousands of tips.

She said, 'I'm Jayme, ' the woman told CNN affiliate WCCO.

Patterson told detectives that Denise Closs struggled with the tape so he wrapped the tape himself around Jayme's mouth and head. She begged the woman for help, saying Patterson had been hiding her in a nearby cabin and that she had escaped when he left her alone.

The New York Post published photos of the cabin Monday. The ceiling is not finished. Exterior photographs show a lean-to loaded with firewood, a three-car garage and an empty box of adult female diapers in a trash can. A sign over the front door reads "Pattersons Retreat".

"Jayme was the champion that finally said enough is enough", he told CNN's "Anderson Cooper Full Circle" Friday, "We can't be more proud of Jayme".

Authorities have said they don't believe Patterson crossed paths with Jayme's parents there.

Speaking on CBS This Morning, Smart recalled some advice her own mother gave her when she was reunited with her family after nine months. "She said that this person usually hides her or or hides her when others are near or when he has to leave the household".

At a brief hearing in Barron County Circuit Court on Monday, Patterson appeared via live video from jail, wearing an orange jumpsuit and glasses and offering brief yes-or-no answers to questions from the judge.

For the past couple of months the community of Barron and beyond has been praying for a safe return of 13-year-old Jayme Closs.

For almost three months, local, state and federal authorities had been looking for Jayme - an agonising search that drew national attention.

Now the family is focused on getting justice, and plan to attend Patterson's court appearance on Monday.

"It's been an emotional time for this community and a hard time for this community".

The suspect in the teen's disappearance was identified as 21-year-old Jake Thomas Patterson, of Gordon. "I don't know what happened with the stars, but they were aligned".
