Bill de Blasio unveils plan for universal health care

De Blasio announces health care coverage for all New Yorkers

"New York City will begin guaranteeing comprehensive health care to every single resident regardless of someone's ability to pay or immigration status, an unprecedented plan that will protect the more than half-a-million New Yorkers now using the ER as a primary provider", writes NBC New York.

During his presser on Tuesday, de Blasio said he will continue to support statewide and national efforts to move toward single-payer, and characterized NYC Care as an immediate solution for hundreds of thousands of uninsured New York City residents.

"We're going to guarantee healthcare for New Yorkers who need it".

New York City is a sanctuary city that defies US immigration enforcement laws, protects illegal immigrants from deportation, and limits local cooperation with federal enforcement officers. "We have to make it in practice a right".

Eric Philips, de Blasio's press secretary, later clarified that the plan is not health insurance. "From this moment on in New York City, everyone is guaranteed the right to healthcare". It'll cost at least $100 million, according to the release.

NYC Care is set to begin in the Bronx this summer and will roll out to the rest of the boroughs by 2021.

"Health care is a right, not a privilege reserved for those who can afford it", de Blasio said in a statement. He said that the undocumented often go to the ER for many health issues, regardless of severity, because they will not be asked for health documentation.

Not anxious about Apple stock; company should build in U.S.
In a letter to investors , Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company had not anticipated the magnitude of the slowdown in the region. China is also one of Apple's most important markets, once referred to as a "hypermarket" by Cook.

That will include undocumented people, regardless of immigration status, de Blasio said.

De Blasio said, as it is, people are using the emergency room as "default health care provider for so many people in this country".

There will be no tax hikes to fund NYC Care, which will be financed by the city's public health budget. Mayor de Blasio is an expert at unveiling cloud-castles and proclaiming himself a master builder.

De Blasio said it will be paid for through the public health care system and he believes it will ultimately save money by preventing trips to the emergency room. "The Mayor must stop abusing the middle class and treating us like his personal ATM".

The mayor made the historic surprise announcement Tuesday during the MSNBC morning program Morning Joe.

"This is a big step in the right direction-but healthcare is still a human right, and must be extended to everyone in the state!" "We are doing just the opposite". "It is the worst way to get health care". We just have to keep working at it!

"We also have a way to provide direct health care to a lot of neighbors who happen to be undocumented - they're still part of our community, they need health care, their families need health care", de Blasio added.
