Trump says government workers hurt by shutdown can "make adjustments"

White House officials and congressional staffers were set to meet Saturday to work on a deal to end the US government shutdown, after Friday's meeting between US President Donald Trump and congressional leaders of both parties yielded no compromises.

Approximately 800,000 federal workers have not been paid since the partial shutdown took effect on December 22.

Vice President Mike Pence, left, White House legislative affairs aide Ja'Ron Smith, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, second row left, White House Senior Adviser Jared Kushner, and others, walk down the steps of the Eisenhower Executive Office building, on the White House complex, after a meeting with staff members of House and Senate leadership, Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, in Washington.

The wall was one of Mr Trump's key campaign pledges and he had said Mexico would pay for it, something Mexico has never agreed to. "He said USA presidents have told him that they should have built the wall". "I don't call it a shutdown, I call it doing what you have to do for the benefit and safety of our country". You can call it whatever you want.

Mick Mulvaney, the acting White House chief of staff, said in an interview on NBC's Meet the Press program that agreeing to a steel separation would allow Democrats to stick to their refusal to fund a wall.

Meanwhile, Mick Mulvaney, his acting chief of staff, said the U.S. president was prepared to take the notion of a concrete wall permanently "off the table" replacing it with a "steel fence" as a concession to Democrats.

"It has nothing to do with politics". Neither Barack Obama nor Jimmy Carter have ever endorsed the idea of a border wall. "It isn't cost effective", Pelosi added. Trump said on Twitter that "not much headway" was made on Saturday, and he told reporters on Sunday that the next meeting is unlikely to produce results either.

But he also repeated an earlier threat to declare a national emergency "depending on what happens in the next few days".

Two vulnerable Republican senators up for re-election in 2020 - Cory Gardner of Colorado and Susan Collins of ME - have broken ranks to back approving the budget and ending the shutdown. Democrats familiar with the meeting said the White House position was "untenable".

Former Canadian prime minister Kim Campbell used the same expletive to describe U.S. President Donald Trump as a newly elected Democratic congresswoman who is now under fire for her comments.

A Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll reportedly shows 50% blame the president for the shutdown, while 32% see the Democratic Party as culpable.

"I can relate", Trump, a former NY businessman, said when asked if he could relate to the pain of federal workers struggling to pay their bills.

"It's being talked about", Pence told Fox News.

Republican Susan Collins of ME wants the Senate to take up House-passed bills to re-open the government.

Without a deal to end the partial government shutdown, the Department of Homeland Security will not be able to bring some furloughed workers back to their jobs while others continue to be forced to work without paychecks for the time being.

Not all Republicans agree with Trump's insistence on keeping many government agencies shuttered until the border debate is resolved.
