Government shutdown could mean delayed tax returns

Bigapplestock

Customers are asking how and when they should file their taxes, as the partial government shutdown continues.

During the shutdown, the IRS can do many of its activities, such as protecting government property, process returns that come with payments and conduct criminal investigations.

A decrease in the number of IRS workers means that tax services aren't able to send information as quickly as usual, which in turn may cause a delay in refunds.

File your tax return but don't count on having your refund any time soon.

And during shutdowns, only a fraction of IRS employees work.

If the partial government shutdown goes on for weeks, it could delay your tax refund check.

Mega Millions jackpot rises to $415 million
A winning Pennsylvania Lottery Mega Millions ticket worth $4 million was sold at an Erie County store for Tuesday's drawing. The Mega Millions ticket was one of two winning the third-tier prize in the December 28 drawing.

"Individuals and CPAs have been calling the IRS for clarification on some of those things and obviously they're not taking any calls right now".

As the government shutdown enters another week, federal agencies like the IRS are feeling the effects. "They barely make it month by month, so this is going to be a big issue".

"The IRS hasn't announced a start date yet for the 2019 filing season", the report added.

If the impasse is resolved before mid-January, the traditional start of tax season, early tax filers may not feel a significant impact. As of Friday, it's unclear when filing season begins. But if you're due a refund, well, you may have to wait a long time to get it. However, for some, the April 15 deadline is relatively meaningless because in an effort to get money in their bank account from their return sooner, they file their taxes early.

Looking back at previous year, by February 2, 2018, the IRS had paid $12.6 billion in refunds to more than six million households.

"You worry about the filing season because of the tax-law changes anyway".
