United States troops to leave Syria but YPG support to continue

Trump Goes Wobbly on Threats

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said he came out of a lunch with Trump feeling reassured about the Syria policy.

Donald Trump doubled down on his decision to withdraw US forces from Syria, a day after a top Republican senator said the president may be open to changing his strategy.

The move resulted in the resignation of US Secretary of Defence Jim Mattis.

Asked in a Fox News interview Monday about how he had assuaged Graham, the president said, "I said, 'You know, I never said that I'm going to rush out'".

After first talking about firing Gen. James "Mad Dog" Mattis, Trump discussed both the timeline for troop withdrawal and the fate of Kurdish allies in the region once US troops leave.

He says the question for lawmakers is "can we stop hating each other enough up here to find a way forward that would be a win-win". "ISIS is mostly gone, we're slowly sending our troops back home to be with their families", Trump wrote, in part.

The prime minister told the press ahead of the meeting-held in Brazil's capital after the inauguration of the country's new president, Jair Bolsonaro-the main topics of discussion was to be with the withdrawal of US troops from Syria and Iranian attempts to establish a military presence in the war-torn country.

After a lengthy meeting with President Trump, Sen.

"I never said we are getting out overnight", Trump said.

Graham told reporters that Trump was committed to making sure Turkey did not clash with the Kurdish YPG forces once US troops leave Syria, and was assuring the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally that it would have a buffer zone in the region to help protect its own interests.

Much of the criticism surrounding the President's decision to withdraw troops from Syria - a move he frequently mentioned both on the campaign trail and in office - has been tied to the possibility that a lack of USA troops could allow ISIS to regain some of its strength in the region.

Graham is specifically calling for helping young "Dreamer" immigrants remain in the U.S.as well as another 400,000 people from countries struggling with natural disasters or armed conflicts.

'I campaigned on getting out of Syria and other places.

Speaking later on CNN, Mr Graham also expressed concern that the USA withdrawal would leave "our allies the Kurds" in the north of Syria exposed to attacks from Turkey.

"It is Fake News and Pundits who have FAILED for years that are doing the complaining".

Trump defended his decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria, saying the battle was "lost long ago", adding, "besides that, we're talking about sand and death".

Graham has been a harsh critic of the withdrawal decision, which he initially called a "disaster".

Graham said the process of removing the military could potentially be slowed down. The criticism from McChrystal, who commanded USA -led troops in Afghanistan from 2009 to 2010, echoed long-standing denunciations by former senior intelligence officials, who have warned that Trump's approach to national security is reckless.

That proposal would likely anger Turkey, where Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, holds talks this week.
