‘Could be a while’: Trump refuses to budge in shutdown standoff

Trump Calls Out Dems for Blocking Judicial Nominations

With the shutdown lumbering through its second week, Trump made a number of false claims about the wall in the hours leading up to the meeting, and Democrats sought to preempt the White House gathering by saying they had no plans to be lectured with inaccurate information. "We know that we have a challenge along the border".

Roughly a quarter of the federal government and 800,000 federal employees are affected by a shutdown, which was caused by a lapse in funding for the agencies.

Stirewalt said that Trump needs to figure out what he and his administration are willing to give up to end the shutdown altogether.

"No, we are not giving up", Trump added.

"We are asking the president to open up the government", the California Democrat said.

Jeffries said that while Trump wants to "waste millions in taxpayer dollars on a medieval border wall", Democrats are drawing "a line in the stand" against the spending they say won't make the border any safer.

By passing this bill in the Senate but blocking it in the House on Trump's order, Republicans boxed themselves in.

Today marks the last day of the Trump-Ryan-McConnell era of unified Republican government in Washington, which, despite the vast political power wielded by three men between whom there exists near-perfect ideological alignment, will still conclude in the midst of a two-week government shutdown of their own creation.

The Democrats plan to vote on a bipartisan package of six Senate spending bills and a stopgap measure to re-open the Department of Homeland Security at its current funding levels until February 8, the aide said.

Trump believes he has public opinion on his side and, at very least, his base of supporters behind him, the officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. His demand infuriated many Republicans who had been working to avoid a shutdown, but most have followed his lead and are insisting Democrats broker some sort of compromise.

"It's too important a subject to walk away from it", he said.

"We have given the Republicans the chance to take yes for an answer", Pelosi said.

Addressing a cabinet meeting on the 12th day of the partial shutdown, Mr Trump warned it "could be a long time" before the impasse is resolved. But with the 115th Congress coming to a close, Trump has squandered his last, best opportunity to secure anything in the eventual deal that will resemble the border security package he wants. He tweeted: "Let's make a deal?"

The $5 billion Trump is seeking would cover only a portion of the money needed for a border wall, a project estimated to cost about $23 billion. -Mexican border that was a centerpiece of his 2016 presidential campaign.

"This is national security we're talking about", he said at a cabinet meeting ahead of talks at the White House with top Democratic and Republican lawmakers. "It is a crucial part of any kind of border security", Crenshaw told Fox & Friends Wednesday.

Democrats have signaled a willingness to approve $1.3 billion in funds for border security in an extension of existing spending levels, a portion of which can be used to replace and fix existing sections of wall and fencing. That measure would provide money for the remainder of the fiscal year, until September 30. Democrats have remained committed to blocking any funding for the wall.
