Serena Williams calls Roger Federer ‘Superman’ on handling twins

Roger Federer won the battle of tennis giants during his mixed-doubles meeting with Serena Williams at the Hopman Cup, but both players were beaming with smiles after the match was over.

Federer and playing partner Belinda Bencic overcame Williams and Frances Tiafoe in the Fast4 format in front of a 14,000 capacity crowd.

"Thank you for making it possible", 20-times Grand Slam victor Federer, who is gearing up to defend his Australian Open title this month, said.

Defeat left six-time winners United States at the bottom of the group ahead of Tuesday's meeting with holders Switzerland, who thumped Britain on Sunday.

Earlier in the night, Williams raced out to a 3-0 lead in the opening set before losing six of the next seven games.

Federer said he was thrilled to play against one of the few players with more Grand Slam titles.

"I was nervous returning!" he grinned.

"This guy (Federer) is great, both off the court and on the court".

"I'm super-supportive of having tennis here in Perth, I think that should be the headline because that's really important to me and to the people here", Federer said.

Orange Bowl: 3 keys to Alabama’s win over Kyler Murray, Oklahoma
Maybe Williams wanted to say his teammate Tua Tagovailoa should have gotten the Heisman over Murray? "You know, it's football". This season, Murray has stunned defenses with the strength of his arm and the quickness of his feet. "Nobody expected this.

"So it just goes to show you how we as players come so far in our careers and we still have other lives that mean so much to ourselves", she added.

Federer got 2019 under way with a 6-4 6-1 defeat of Tiafoe before Williams made it two wins out of two, getting the better of Bencic 4-6 6-4 6-3.

Williams and Bencic followed the men on court for the women's singles.

Federer faced three break points in his first service game, but was near ideal from that point on as he wrapped up the contest in 57 minutes at RAC Arena on Sunday night.

Ahead of that tie, Federer said: "The problem is it's the first of January".

Williams also said the coming match was "like a dream come true".

Her appearance in Perth will be her first tournament since her US Open meltdown, where she was handed a series of code violations in her loss to Naomi Osaka in the final. "It's nice that I'm feeling as good as I am and played a wonderful match against Cameron".

It was another encouraging performance from Federer as he builds his preparation for the upcoming Australian Open in Melbourne, where he will be looking to win a third successive title and seventh overall.
