Kim Jong Un issues threats, calls for new summit with President Trump

The 10 best things Trump did in 2018

However, if the USA did not "keep its promise made in front of the whole world" and instead "insists on sanctions and pressures" on North Korea, "we may be left with no choice but to consider a new way to safeguard our sovereignty and interests".

In the address, Kim Jong-un highlighted last year's developments in inter-Korean and US-North Korea relations, while calling on his country to seek economic development and modernize its defense industry.

"I'll endeavor towards a result that will be welcomed by the global community", Kim said of the potential second meeting between the two leaders.

He warned that he may have no choice but to seek a new path if Washington "continues to break its promises and misjudges the patience of our people by unilaterally demanding certain things and pushes ahead with sanctions and pressure".

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un delivers a speech in North Korea.

Kim emphasized that it is his firm intention to work on building "new relations" with the US, establishing lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula and seeking "complete denuclearization", as agreed to in his June summit with Trump, if the USA takes trustworthy and corresponding measures.

Kim called for South Korea to "completely stop" joint military drills with the United States involving strategic assets, while multilateral negotiations should be pursued to build a permanent peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.

Trump has been discussing a second summit with North Korea for a while, including tweeting on Christmas Eve that he was "Looking forward to my next summit with Chairman Kim!"

Although Pyongyang did not conduct nuclear or missile tests past year, satellite images have pointed to continued activity at the North's related facilities.

Kim also signalled that any deal might require weakening the US-South Korean alliance, urging Seoul not to resume military exercises with the American side.

He also said he was ready to meet Mr Trump again at any time.

Asked about Kante's goal, Sarri told BBC Sport: "He is improving with the right timing and good movement and now I think that we have to work on Ross Barkley ".

But while Kim Jong Un says he wants to continue along the diplomatic path, the clear hint is that without some response from the United States, the rapprochement witnessed a year ago may go into reverse.

However, Trump says sanctions placed on the nation would remain in place until North Korea give up its nuclear arsenal. Noting that neither would be possible under current sanctions, the New York Post speculated Kim is still interested in driving a wedge between the us and South Korea by making offers that will push Seoul to demand sanctions relief for the North or unilaterally defy the sanctions.

In what was the first time a North Korean leader met a sitting U.S. president, the two signed a vaguely phrased agreement to improve ties and work towards denuclearisation.

The Seoul government shut down the joint industrial complex at the North's border town of Kaesong in 2016 in retaliation for Pyongyang's nuclear and missile provocations at the time.

In the speech, Kim hailed the results of the North's diplomatic activities in 2018, including his three meetings with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

But with Kim highlighting the need to turn further attention to economic prosperity in his speech, North Korea is also likely to continue to bring up such economic projects as a main agenda - even more than it did previous year.

In this year's address, Kim reminded viewers that athletes from the two Koreas had marched together under a joint Korean flag at the Opening Ceremonies of those Games.

The United States has firmly insisted North Korea must achieve complete and verifiable denuclearization before sanctions will be lifted and views Pyongyang's disarmament measures to date as largely symbolic.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un brought a new look to his New Year's address - ditching the formalities of a podium and microphone bank to speak from a plush leather chair in front of a wooden mantle piece. North Korea has broken promises made to the United States to halt is nuclear weapons program on at least six prior occasions.

North Korea has not responded to Washington's calls for senior working-level talks to follow up on the June 12 summit, apparently preferring to engage Trump rather than other U.S. officials in its negotiations.
