Absolutely Fabulous stars lead tributes to Dame June Whitfield

Actress June Whitfield after being made a CBE for services to comedy drama in 1998

According to BBC, Whitfield's agent said she passed away peacefully on Friday evening.

She was made a dame in 2017 for services to drama and entertainment.

John Challis, who worked with Whitfield in the sitcom The Green, Green Grass, said her timing and characterisation made life "a bit better and a bit more charming". She reprised the role in the 2016 movie as well.

"Very sad to hear of the death of #JuneWhitfield - one of the nation's most beloved comedy actresses - Carry Ons, Terry & June and too many more to list".

Her Ab Fab co-star Helen Lederer tweeted: "To add to tributes - June Whitfield during #AbsolutelyFabulous - a wizz at the crossword, perfection with feed lines and kindness itself".

Last week, Whitfield appeared to be in good spirits during what turned out to be her last interview, granted to the BBC's David Hamilton. And she remained committed to radio throughout her career, most notably being Roy Hudd's versatile sidekick on his News Huddlines.

Often playing the female stooge to some of Britain's most famous entertainers, she called herself "a comic's tart".

Her other notable roles included a number of appearances in the Carry On films. "Bye-bye Gran", she posted. Instead, she appeared in more than 1,300 episodes of radio and television shows in her seven-decade career.
