No end in sight for US government shutdown

Trump upped the brinkmanship by threatening anew to close the border with Mexico to press Congress to cave to his demand for money to pay for a wall.

"Trump fired off a series of tweets on Friday morning, saying that "We will be forced to close the Southern Border entirely", unless a funding deal is reached with 'the Obstructionist Democrats'".

On day eight of the government shutdown, with no end in sight, Republicans have shifted from blaming Democrats in general to accusing incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of prolonging the closure, even though Trump said just a few weeks ago that he would "own" the shutdown.

Because of the partial government shutdown - which went into effect a week ago - President Trump canceled plans to spend Christmas in Florida, and stayed at the White House. It also is beginning to pinch citizens who count on certain public services.

U.S. President Donald Trump dons a hard hat presented by the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) before addressing their convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S., October 2, 2018.

And Senator Lindsay Graham tweeted a message to Pelosi and the Democrats, signaling he would not vote for a deal that does not include money to fund Trump's border wall.

Nancy Pelosi, who is expected to be House speaker in the new Congress, has vowed to "swiftly" reopen the government once her Democrats take control of that chamber from the Republicans next Thursday.

In a burst of early morning tweets on Friday, Trump said the alternative to funding his controversial wall project would be a total separation from Mexico - including making U.S. vehicle companies pull out their factories based on the other side of the frontier.

During a meeting with Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in the Oval Office on December 11th, Trump said, "I am proud to shut down the government over border security..."

In Mexico, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador sidestepped Trump's threat, telling journalists: "We don't want to be imprudent and we don't think we should get into this".

Resolution of the standoff may end up involving a face-saving deal on a barrier that Trump can call a wall. He alleged Democrats are not dealing because Pelosi is waiting until she secures the speakership.

'They told us last night that they are not countering our last offer, ' Mulvaney said of congressional Democrats. He also threatened to cut off US aid to El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, among countries he deems have not done enough to combat illegal immigration.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador reacted cautiously to Trump's threat to close the border, calling it an "internal affair of the US government".

U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-McAllen, responded to the president's tweets via a prepared statement and did not address the threat to cut off aid to Central American countries. Since assuming office in January 2017, the president has had a Republican-controlled congress.

"She took in the Boxing Day Junkanoo Parade, according to Twitter user Thomas Wayne, and she looked thoroughly unamused as a float featuring the likeness of Trump passed by", the report said.
