Instagram briefly switched to horizontal feed and people just didn’t like it

Silhouettes of mobile users are seen next to a screen projection of Instagram logo in this

The furor was swift and after only about an hour, the update was removed and Instagram was back to normal.

Mosseri, who had previously been head of Facebook's "News Feed", took over Instagram in October.

As mentioned in the update's messaging, Instagram's feed now resembles its Stories feature, giving users the ability to quickly go through each post. The new-look update featured a sideways news feed and was picked apart by users from all over.

The update has been sent to a large number of Instagram users at once, on Thursday. Many users are still upset about losing the chronological feed for photos, which was replaced by an algorithm-controlled feed in 2016. We apologize for any confusion'.

A test change to Instagram got out of control.

The following video shows how the tap-to-advance in the feed worked on Instagram.

Unfortunately thousands users were not happy with the drastic change and immediately began voicing their disapproval on Twitter. The accidental update affected only iPhone users and Android and desktop users were spared from the accidental "tap through posts" update. If you do scroll up, you will enter the comments area of the photo you are now on. Yea-no. Instagram executive Adam Mosseri tweeted that it was supposed to be "a small test".

"We rushed our redesign, solving one problem but creating many others", declared Snap CEO Evan Spiegel.

Because, after the initial surprise of such a big aesthetic and technical change, what one may have noticed is how the change forces the user to go slower.

Given the extremely negative response that the updated received from its users, Instagram may think twice about releasing the update to the public.

Asked if the change to a swipe format, or a version of it, was something to expect in the future, the Instagram spokeswoman declined to comment.
