An 8-year-old Guatemalan boy dies in US custody on Christmas

The boy went to hospital but died in the early hours of Christmas Day

The child and his father were transferred to Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in New Mexico, where staff diagnosed the boy with a common cold and fever.

Seven-year-old Jakelin Caal, another Guatemalan national, died December 8 of dehydration and shock, less than a day after she was apprehended by border agents.

Migrants, part of a caravan of thousands from Central America trying to reach the United States, return to Mexico after being hit by tear gas sprayed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

She was flown to hospital in El Paso, Texas where she died the next day.

The death comes two weeks after another migrant child, Jakelin Caal Maquin, died after being detained by border agents.

The father and son were not identified, and the agency statement said it will release more details "as available and appropriate". Agency guidelines say immigrants generally shouldn't be detained for more than 72 hours in CBP holding facilities, which are usually smaller and have fewer services than ICE's detention centers.

Finch finger no problem for Boxing Day
Firebrand captain Kohli has, as ever, been in the heat of the battle during the first two tests of the series. At Perth, we felt he was about 70 to 80 percent fit, and we didn't want to risk him.

In the second case, an agent noticed Monday that the child had become ill.

The agency said the cause of the boy's death has not been determined and that it has notified the Department of Homeland Security's inspector general and the Guatemalan government.

"DHS has continued to see a dramatic increase in unaccompanied children and family units arriving at our borders illegally or without authorization", said the release.

CBP announced new notification procedures in response to Jakelin's death, which was not revealed until several days later. During the screening, the father denied that either he or his daughter were ill.

Her body was repatriated on Sunday to Guatemala, and her remains were to be transported to the indigenous community of Raxruha, where she called home.
