Amazon Alexa user given access to stranger’s conversations

Amazon employee error shares thousands of Alexa recordings with a random user

The audio files were transmitted through a link, which was confirmed by Amazon, though it added that the incident was caused by a "human error".

Amazon sent recordings made by its Alexa virtual assistant to the wrong user-a man who reportedly had never used the product.

After the man contacted Amazon to let them know of the mistake, Amazon took away his access to the files, but not before he had downloaded them to his computer. When he unzipped the files, he discovered that the folder not only had information pertaining to his everyday Amazon searches but it also had around 1,700 WAV files and a PDF which contained transcripts of Alexa's interpretation of voice commands.

At the outset of 2018, the sector was preparing for a watershed year, in which multiple new market entrants, heightened competition between Amazon's Echo and Google Home, and an increasingly rich set of smart speaker applications seemed poised to lead to an explosion in smart speaker ownership and usage.

Frazee voluntarily released his phone to be searched and allowed officers to take a DNA sample on December 12, his lawyer said. Ms Berreth and Mr Frazee did not live together, according to relatives, and Ms Berreth's daughter has been living Mr Frazee.

The spokesman went on to say, "We resolved the issue with the two customers involved and took measures to further optimize our processes". In fact, the horse had not only bolted, but sired a whole stable of fowls, given Schneider had already contacted c't, who had in turn been able to figure out who the mystery voices on the recordings belonged to. The recordings apparently consisted of conversations between a man and woman.

One user emailed Amazon asking for all the personal data the company had stored on him.

The tech snafu in question occurred when a German Amazon customer requested access to his archived data (permissible under a European Union data protection law). While it depends on how Alexa devices are used, it is clear that the recordings contain private information that most, if not all, customers would be very uncomfortable with if leaked to others. Perhaps they will establish themselves even more in the light of such revelations. The alarms, Spotify commands, and public transport inquiries included in the data revealed a lot about the victims' personal habits, their jobs, and their taste in music. In May, a couple in OR found that their Amazon Echo sent a conversation to the husband's employee.

Twitter users are reacting to this latest data breach with outrage and shock. "Then, the subsequent conversation was heard as a "send message" request".
