Teen Vaping Soared In 2018

Vaping among teens on the rise, according to study

Besides the bad publicity that e-cigarettes are still subjected to, a TPD regulation banning sales of nicotine containing e-liquids above 20 mg/ml, has been making it hard for many smokers to switch to e-cigarettes.It is a known fact that when smokers first turn to vaping, they first start with higher doses of nicotine to match the hit they were getting from their cigarettes, and then proceed to wean themselves slowly in order to curb their addiction.

The Monitoring the Future Survey, conducted by the University of MI, finds that one in five high school seniors said they'd vaped within the past month.

The increases, based on a representative sampling of 13,850 high school students nationwide, translate to about 1.3 million more adolescents vaping in 2018, the researchers said.

Reported use of e-cigarettes specifically in the last 30 days almost doubled among 10th and 12th graders, from 11 percent in 2017 to 20.9 percent in 2018, the survey said.

A new survey warns that teenage use of vaping devices has increased substantially in a single year.

Vaping use is also seen among younger teens, with the MTF survey likewise finding that more than one of every 10 8th graders reported vaping nicotine liquid in the past 12 months. "So we're not so sure that when they say they're just using flavorings that they really know what's in them", Compton said.

The skyrocketing number of children using e-cigarettes has even stunned experts.

EPL: Manchester United mistakenly announce Solskjaer as Mourinho's replacement
Jose Mourinho's replacement as Manchester United manager has seemingly been confirmed via an unexpected source. United sacked Mourinho on Tuesday morning after suffering their worst ever start to a Premier League season.

The overall increase in vaping in the survey appears to be consistent with data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showing a 78% increase in youth vaping between 2017 and 2018, said Dr. Pamela Ling, a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, who works with the school's Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education and was not involved with the new report.

The latest survey indicates that students may not realize they're using an addictive substance. The increase was so worrying that the Food and Drug Administration announced a series of actions aimed at cutting underage access to vape products. More than 25 percent claimed they vaped "just flavoring" in the past year, up from 20.6 percent in 2017.

Compton said more progress is needed, however.

Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine. "The concern is these kids that become addicted to nicotine from vaping also may transition to tobacco smoking". Teenage opioid use is also decreasing: 3.4 percent of seniors reported using prescription opioids in 2018, down from 4.2 percent in 2017 - and significantly lower than its peak of 9.5 percent in 2004.

Use of other illicit drugs - including cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, ecstasy and hallucinogens - did not change substantially in the past year, according to the survey results. That's the largest percentage-point increase ever recorded by the survey for vaping within the last 30 days for that grade. This reflects attitudes among people their parents' age: As more states legalize the recreational use of cannabis, more people say they believe it is safe and natural.

Fewer teens report binge drinking (five or more drinks in a row).

The survey found 36 percent of seniors used marijuana at least sometimes, and close to 6 percent said they used it daily.
