Comey grilled for six hours in closed-door House hearing

President Donald Trump

"The entire objective of this investigation is to cast aspersions on the real investigation ..."

As he walked down one of the Capitol corridors, he was asked about Trump's morning Twitter claim that he is "best friends" with special counsel Robert Mueller - part of Trump's attack that Mueller is 'highly conflicted'.

As special counsel Robert Mueller prepares to reveal more details about his investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election in the face of filing deadlines, President Trump is unleashing a barrage of tweets aimed at everyone from Mueller to former FBI director James Comey to former Justice Department officials.

Comey himself complained the proceedings were too focused on Clinton.

The interview is expected to last much of the day.

So far, more than 30 people have been charged or pleaded guilty in Mueller's investigation.

NY congressman Jerrold Nadler, the top Democrat on the judiciary panel, said as he walked into the Comey interview that he will end this investigation when Democrats take the House majority in January. GOP lawmakers who stepped outside while the questioning was underway indicated they weren't satisfied and will bring him back later this month.

"The Department of Justice is going to have to agree to allow [Comey] to come back and answer a great many questions that now he is not answering", Issa said.

North Carolina Officials Had Prior Warnings Of Voting Issues, Report Says
The revelations and ensuing national news coverage have put pressure on Republicans and attracted attention from top Democrats. The board is meeting later this month to hear evidence, but it's unclear whether the race will be settled then.

The former Federal Bureau of Investigation director dropped his opposition to a closed-door hearing on December 2 after members of the Judiciary Committee panel agreed to provide a full transcript within 24 hours and said he would be permitted to make it public. He branded the probe a political stunt created to divert attention from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation during the election.

"And then what gets done with it at that point, we'll see", McCarthy said.

In their filing, Comey's attorneys argued the subpoena to testify privately violated House rules, "harasses the witness", had no "legitimate goal", and that it "wreaks of political theater".

The transcript was released under an agreement with Comey, who challenged a subpoena from the committee in court and pressed for an open hearing out of concerns his comments would be selectively leaked.

Comey resisted the calls to appear for a hearing while insisting that it be made public.

He added that the Justice Department inspector general's investigation into these matters is looming over all of this.

After the court fight was resolved, Goodlatte said a transcript will be released "as soon as possible after the interview, in the name of our combined desire for transparency".
