UN Security Council to meet on Iran missile test

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned of regional escalation after Iran conducted a missile test

US Strategic Command tracked the Iranian missile test using a satellite network that traces ballistic missile launches, a senior administration official told CNN.

In Paris, the French foreign ministry also said the missile test was not in compliance with the United Nations resolution. "We will continue to both develop and test missiles".

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has criticized China, Iran, and Russian Federation for violating numerous treaties and multistate agreements.

We condemn these activities, and call upon Iran to cease immediately all activities related to ballistic missiles created to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons.

He said the test violated UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed the Iran nuclear deal signed by world powers with the Islamic republic.

Pompeo's statement comes after the US and Chinese leaders' working dinner on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Argentina on 1 December, during which US President Donald Trump agreed to postpone increasing the tariff on $200 billion in Chinese imports to 25 percent, initially planned to go through on January 1.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said President Trump is building a new world order based on the foundation of American values.

WASHINGTON: The United States urged the European Union on Monday to apply sanctions targeting Iran´s ballistic missile program, calling it a "grave and escalating threat".

The Iran nuclear deal, although highly controversial, was considered one of the Obama administration's major legacies.

The U.S. has come into confrontation with Russian Federation over its alleged breach of a 1987 nuclear arms treaty, which banned nuclear and conventional missiles with ranges of 310 miles to 3,417 miles.

"We would like to see the European Union move sanctions that target Iran's missile programme", Hook told reporters aboard Pompeo's plane as he travelled to Brussels for a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meeting.

In response, Fitzpatrick wrote, "Not to excuse Iran's missile test, but it is not a "violation" of UNSCR 2231, which only "calls upon" Iran not conduct such tests".

Pompeo's address, which was met with polite applause, rejected concerns among many traditional USA allies that Trump is undermining the West by withdrawing from climate, free-trade and arms control accords.

"While [the United States] itself violates [UN Security Council resolution] 2231 - and even threatens to punish those who don't wish to violate it in abiding with illegal USA sanctions - it now falsely accuses Iran of violating the very SAME resolution", Mr. Zarif added. President Donald Trump pulled out of an global nuclear agreement in May and reimposed sanctions on Tehran, criticizing the deal for not including curbs on Iran's development of ballistic missiles or its support for proxies in Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and Iraq. "Our support for JCPOA in no way lessens our concern at Iran's destabilising missile programme and determination that it should cease".
