Female Footballer Wins Historic Award, Is Promptly Asked If She Can Twerk

Ballon d'Or: Ada Hegerberg asked to twerk on stage after winning women's award

The 23-year-old Lyon and Norway striker became the first victor of the prize, which recognises the world's best player, at an awards ceremony in Paris.

However, guest host for the night, French DJ Martin Solveig, asked Hegerberg whether she knew how to "twerk" moments after the prize was awarded, overshadowing the moment.

Hegerberg told BBC Sport she "didn't consider it sexual harassment", but the charity Women in Sport has told HuffPost UK members were "extremely disappointed" by Solveig's behaviour.

The Frenchman, 42, said Lyon and Norway forward Hegerberg - who answered "no" - had told him after the ceremony she "understood it was a joke".

"Apologies to anyone who may have been offended", he wrote on Twitter.

Ada Hegerberg is one of the most successful woman footballers in the world right now, and she's also rumoured to be one of the highest paid.

"And to everyone who thinks people are overreacting and it was just a joke.it wasn't".

Ada Hegerberg broke a major barrier for female soccer players by becoming the first woman to receive the Ballon d'Or, the highest individual honour in the sport.

Luka Modric won the award after helping Real Madrid to another Champions League trophy, before inspiring Croatia to an unlikely appearance in the World Cup final. It's really sad that it went that way.

"I think the fact I scored 54 goals last season and 53 goals this year - it's a lot of goals in one year", she said.

She then was pulled in to a slow dance with Solveig who twirled her in front of the crowd, during which Hegerberg was visibly uncomfortable.

The prolific striker has abstained from playing for Norway's national team since 2017 because of the country's treatment of its women's national team.

When Norwegian footballer Ada Hegerberg became the first woman to win the Ballon D'Or, she likely wasn't expecting to get asked about her dancing prowess. "It's a huge step for women's football".

After lifting the trophy, Hegerberg addressed the crowd at the star-studded awards show, saying: "I want to ask every young woman to believe in themselves".

"What questions did they ask [best men's under-21 player Kylian] Mbappe and [best men's player Luka] Modric?"

The three-time Women's Champions League victor with French team Lyon says she'll be resting during the World Cup and training for the next season with her club. They have existed since 1956 but had not previously had a women's football category.

"I didn't take it as that at all", she said.
