Ohio Senators speak up in wake of GM plant closings

Donald Trump

For Ford, some of the impetus for the layoffs is a restructuring program the company is undertaking, but the layoffs are also related to the president's trade war, with the company citing recent sales woes in China and increased material costs as driving some of their pain.

Shares of GM rose 0.7 percent to $36.95. GM will eliminate roughly 14,000 jobs between five plants in the US and Canada next year.

"They underscored their concerns for the workers, for the communities and for the families that are affected by this decision", a senior Canadian official told reporters.

Numerous jobs would be eliminated in Midwestern U.S. states, a region where Trump has long promised a manufacturing rebirth.

"General Motors is very counter to what other auto, and other, companies are doing". "Nothing being closed in Mexico & China", Trump tweeted on Tuesday.

Trump boasted on Twitter Wednesday that Steel Dynamics, based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, was opening a new plant in the Southwest, creating 600 jobs. With some factories down to one shift a day, GM said it needed to cut its capacity to make traditional passenger cars, while keeping lower-cost production in Mexico.

Nintendo Switch Cyber Monday: Buy a console, get $35 eShop cash free
In total, Nintendo generated over $250 million in the United States alone during the five day holiday period. Switch hardware sales grew 115 percent compared to the same period in 2017, presumably in the USA only.

Mr Trump typically took to Twitter to announce further auto tariffs were "being studied now" after the vehicle manufacturing giant announced closures in a bid to boost production in the US.

"That's OH, and you better get back in there soon", he said.

Well, here is President Trump's chance to help us. "We are now looking at cutting all @GM subsidies, including.for electric cars", he wrote in two Tuesday afternoon tweets. GM is expected to hit that 200,000-unit limit at near the end of this year, which triggers the process of diminishing the credit until it's phased out completely.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders did not elaborate as to what cuts could be enacted. Trump has publicly threatened GM as he tries to follow through on campaign promises to boost American manufacturing - which he reiterated during a rally near the Lordstown facility a year ago. Kudlow, who met with Barra on Monday, said that Trump felt betrayed by GM, which the government had been trying to help.

"We appreciate the actions this administration has taken on behalf of industry to improve the overall competitiveness of USA manufacturing", GM said in a statement Tuesday. "We're not going to rest until GM fills every plant in the country that's idled with work and workers". The facility will employ about 600 people and serve "southern US energy and construction sectors, which consume considerable amounts of flat roll steel products". Contradicting President Donald Trump's November 29 claim that it has announced a new plant in the USA, the automaker said it is only considering opening a second facility. The union has vowed to fight the closures legally and in collective bargaining.

The threat of auto tariffs continues to loom large over the vehicle manufacturing sector. Those SUVs are the only models built in that plant. The factory is still in operation and now builds the Sonic and the Bolt electric auto. "Today, GM is continuing to take proactive steps to improve overall business performance, including the reorganization of its global product development staffs, the realignment of its manufacturing capacity and a reduction of salaried workforce".

In two tweets, the president said that extending tariffs already in place for foreign-built small trucks to the auto sector would help domestic manufacturers. In October, nearly 65 percent of new vehicles sold in the USA were trucks or SUVs. The United States slapped an additional 25 percent tariff on Chinese-made vehicles earlier this year, prompting China to retaliate.
