Mickelson wins match against Woods with birdie on 22nd hole

The Match Tiger Woods loses $300k in single bet with Phil Mickelson

Phil Mickelson beat Tiger Woods on Friday at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas in more ways than one.

Two of the world's biggest golfers, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, went head-to-head on November 23, and Tiger had a hilarious response when he won $200,000 from his opponent on the first hole.

Mickelson was one-up with only two holes to play when Woods kept himself alive in the contest with a sensational birdie. The match at Shadow Creek Golf Club finished under floodlights.

Mickelson clinched the victory with a short putt after Woods' tee shot landed on the green but he left his six-foot birdie putt short.

Woods then three-putted the next green, but he again restored parity with a neat up-and-down for birdie at the driveable par-four 11th before going ahead for the first time when he clipped a wedge to two feet for a winning birdie at the 12th.

Golf's first venture into pay-per-view was hyped like a Las Vegas prizefight but proved more of a pillow fight with both golfers in jovial mood, playing for a purse that was put up by sponsors and will go to a charity of Mickelson's choice.

The pay-per-view was made available free online after some services had technical difficulties. There was some banter between Woods and Mickelson early on but not much as the stakes increased.

U.S. envoy hopes for peace deal with Taliban in 2019
Khairkhwah and Fazl were among five senior Taliban members released from the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay in 2014 in exchange for U.S.

Well, cut to the day of the match, and it looks like Phil is out $200,000 - he missed his putt to birdie, giving Tiger the W.

"You've been doing this crap to me for 20 years, I don't know why I'm surprised now", Mickelson joked.

Those side bets were to be paid to the respective players' charitable foundations with the players' own funds.

Mickelson also said it was like old times for him against Woods after that trademark shot. Mickelson then squared it with a birdie on the par-3 13th and retook the lead when Woods bogeyed the par-4 15th.

It was a fitting end for a man known for his short game after Mickelson struggled with his short game throughout regulation.

The matchplay between the two Americans went to a 22nd hole before Mickelson sunk a four-foot putt for victory.
