DON'T EAT ROMAINE LETTUCE: Canadians, Americans warned of E. coli

Don't eat romaine lettuce: Health Canada

Health officials say two people in New Hampshire have been affected by a new E. coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce. "If you don't know if it's romaine or can't confirm the source, don't eat it".

Acting on the CDC's recommendation, grocers nationwide are pulling suspect romaine lettuce product from store shelves. Stores and restaurants should not sell or serve it.

Which begs the question. can you wash E. coli off lettuce?

Restaurants in the east are feeling the impacts of the recall of Romaine lettuce by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration after E. coli sickened 50 people in the U.S. and Canada.

Six people have been hospitalized. "It's very unusual for these public agencies to recommend that consumers completely avoid a product because it may be a health risk".

The FDA's blanket warning in the current outbreak is broader and more direct than the ones issued in the earlier outbreak, said Robert Whitaker, chief science officer for the Produce Marketing Association. "This is especially important ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, when people will be sitting down for family meals".

Finland memes Trump for suggesting ‘raking’ stops wildfires
Even so, Trump's leaf-raking comments were fodder for the internet, and Finnish people couldn't resist the joke opportunity. Apparently, President Sauli Niinistö never told him that " raking " prevents wildfires . "And they don't have any problem".

During the last romaine alert in April, Just Salad switched in organic mesclun, organic arugula, shredded kale, baby spinach, red cabbage and iceberg lettuce, he said.

The strain of E. coli bacteria is the same one that caused a similar outbreak previous year.

Despite those possible financial implications, several national grocery chains released statements late Wednesday afternoon saying they were in the process of removing romaine lettuce from store shelves. Check here for ongoing updates on the E. coli romaine lettuce outbreak from the CDC.

This is, in fact, the second time that romaine lettuce has been declared unsafe to consume this year, and the 21st such food safety warning issued overall in what's proving to be a record year for foodborne illnesses. This means that the ill people were more likely to share a common source of infection.

"At the end of the day what's frustrating is that it's good quality product that has to be destroyed for no reason", Puri said.

According to the CDC, people typically get sick from the Shiga toxin-producing E.coli 2 to 8 days after ingesting the germ.
