Roger Federer beats Dominic Thiem at ATP Finals

Switzerland's Roger Federer wipes his face during his ATP World Tour Finals singles final tennis match against Japan's Kei Nishikori at the O2 Arena in London Sunday Nov. 11 2018

Twenty-time Grand Slam victor Roger Federer recovered from his opening-day defeat by recording an easy win over Dominic Thiem on Tuesday at the ATP Finals.

Despite an easy 6-2, 6-3 victory over Dominic Thiem, Federer endured a moment he'd probably rather forget.

Having slumped to a shock defeat by Kei Nishikori in the group opener, another defeat for Federer would have meant he would not advance from his group.

The 37-year-old's proud record of always reaching the semi-finals at the season-ender since it moved to London in 2009 looked in peril after a surprise loss to Kei Nishikori in his opening round-robin match on Sunday.

The BBC and Sky Sports share the broadcasting rights to the ATP Finals this week.

"I just went into the match and wanted to show my real self again, basically, because two days ago (against Federer) was really bad", said the French Open runner-up.

Yet at 6-0 5-0, and with less than an hour on the clock, the 28-year-old finally managed to string four serves together to get on the scoreboard and avoid the dreaded "double bagel".

He added: "Important for me is to play a good last match here in the round-robin, try to beat Kevin".

Barcelona coach Valverde: Real Betis pressing too much for us
Gio LO CELSO also scored, his was a shot which goalkeeper TER STEGEN tried to catch but it went through the hands of the German. The video assistant referee deemed Messi onside but there was no more late drama as Betis held on for a shock victory.

The same can be said for Thiem, who struggled to land balls in play in a disappointing defeat to Federer, and the Austrian described his display as "not really acceptable". "I love playing in London, always have, always will".

"I'll do the same tomorrow because it worked", Federer said of deciding not to practice on Monday.

Anderson was brimming with confidence, being nearly untouchable on serve and made some powerful returns followed by loads of pulsating groundstroke to steamroll the Japanese No. 1, serving him a nice bagel and taking the opening set 6-0.

Thiem, who also was broken in the seventh game of the first set and the first and last games of the second set, won a respectable 50 percent of his second-serve points but just 56 percent of his first-serve points.

Federer turned the screw to break again immediately in the second set.

"I don't really feel that I am in the mood during a World Tour Finals to discuss that topic, to be honest".

"It's amongst the best (matches) I've played", world number six Anderson told reporters.
