Election Night 2018: Republicans Retain Control Of US Senate; Democrats Take House

Alexandria Ocasio Cortez

President Donald Trump weighed in on Tuesday's midterm elections via Twitter.

Trump's team immediately sought to give him credit for retaining their narrow Senate majority, even as Republicans lost the House.

With the midterm elections coming towards an end in the United States, the poll results so far have revealed that the Democrats have taken an edge over the Republicans to take over the House of Representatives.

Anna Giaretelli from the Washington Examiner joined Larry Williams Drive to discuss the latest updates from the tight contest.

But network projections said that Democrats would take control of the House for the first time in eight years, upending the balance of power in Washington where Trump enjoyed an easy ride following his shock 2016 election with Republican dominance of both chambers.

In Texas, Democrat Beto O'Rourke and incumbent Senator Ted Cruz are neck-and-neck as votes were being counted in the state. And in Tennessee, Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn defeated former Gov. Phil Bredesen, a top Democratic recruit.

With the final days of the 2018 campaign interrupted by a spate of politically motivated attempted bombings and a massacre at a synagogue in Pittsburgh, about 2 in 10 Democratic and Republican voters think their own party's way of talking about politics is leading to an increase in violence.

Republican Brian Kemp is well ahead of Democrat Stacey Abrams in Georgia's governor election.

Democrats won contested House races in Florida and Virginia, while a Republican beat back an aggressive challenge in Kentucky.

Long lines and malfunctioning machines marred the first hours of voting in some precincts, including in Georgia, where some voters reported waiting up to three hours to vote in a hotly contested gubernatorial election. She was the nation's first female speaker.

Overall, 6 in 10 voters said the country was headed in the wrong direction, but roughly that same number described the national economy as excellent or good.

In mid-term elections two years after he won the White House, Mr Trump and his fellow Republicans were set to maintain their majority in the US Senate following a divisive campaign marked by fierce clashes over race, immigration and other cultural issues. Bob Menendez, who, less than a year ago, stood trial for federal corruption charges.

Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin was re-elected in West Virginia, which Trump captured by 42 percentage points.

Democrats' performance in the House battlefield was mixed. The Republican incumbent had been branded Barbara "Trumpstock" by Democrats in a race that pointed to Trump's unpopularity among college-educated women in the suburbs.

Urbanites voted nearly 2 to 1 in favor of Democrats, and small-town and rural voters cast votes for Republicans by a significant, but smaller margin. Bernie Sanders and Democrats Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Kirsten Gillibrand of NY and Minnesota's Amy Klobuchar were easily re-elected.

All 435 seats in the House, 35 seats in the 100-member Senate and 36 of the 50 state governorships were up for grabs.

Rep. Maxine Waters, who has urged people to get in the faces of Trump administration officials in public could become chairman of the House Financial Services Committee.

Thirty-five seats are in play in Tuesday's election.

Almost 40% of voters cast their ballots to express opposition to the president, according to a national survey of the electorate, while one-in-four said they voted to express support for Mr Trump.

Likely Senate outcome: Republicans hold on to the Senate. Democrats were able to ride opposition to Trump to wins in more Democratic-leaning states like NY and deep-red states like Oklahoma.

Republicans paved their path to victory by defeating Democrats Joe Donnelly of IN and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota.

Trump, who will complete his second year in the White House in January 2019, has campaigned non-stop in the midterm elections, focusing on states where his Republican Party has a chance to pick up seats, especially in the US Senate.
