"It's a very risky and very serious situation", Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said.

Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said Saturday 14 additional bodies were found, bringing the death toll to 23.

Maclean said no details were immediately available about the circumstances of the deaths and that the bodies' badly burned condition would make identification hard.

The flames razed more than 6700 buildings, nearly all of them homes, making it California's most destructive wildfire since record-keeping began. He says some of the victims were found in cars and in houses. The flames descended on the mountain community so fast that many people were forced to abandon their vehicles and run for their lives down the sole road through the mountain town.

Another 35 people were reported missing, McLean said.

Now the most damaging wildfire in California's history, the Camp Fire continues to rage after starting Thursday morning in Butte County.

The flames have reportedly covered over 90,000 acres of land. The Camp Fire is 20% contained, while the Woolsey Fire is just 5% contained.

"The magnitude of destruction we have seen is really unbelievable and heartbreaking, and our hearts go to everybody who has been affected by this", said Mark Ghilarducci, the director of the California Office of Emergency Services.

In southern California, more wildfires burned, including one just north of Los Angeles and another in Ventura County near Thousand Oaks, where a Marine Corps veteran shot dead 12 people in a country music bar on Wednesday.

The Camp Fire has killed at least nine people in Paradise and destroyed 6,453 structures.

Early on Saturday, flames approached Malibu's Pepperdine University, a private residential college with 7,700 students, where many remained sheltered on the main campus.

US President Donald Trump said that the ongoing wildfires in the western state of California had caused a "catastrophic damage" adding that 52,000 people have been already evacuated over the disaster.

"There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor".

"We have all kinds of tools to help us do this smarter, to build in a more sustainable way and to co-exist with fire", he said.

But the president's point is sound.
