Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Accuses ICE of 'Human Rights Violations' in Victory Speech

Alexandria Ocasio Cortez votes in her district in the Bronx

The Democrats may not have gotten quite the blue wave they were hoping for ー but for women in politics, Election Day was an indisputable success.

And regardless of who wins in Arizona's competitive Senate race, the state will elect either Republican Martha McSally or Democrat Kyrsten Sinema as the state's first woman to serve in the chamber.

The mid-term elections brought a surge of female candidates to ballots across America in a vote being seen as a referendum on the Trump presidency.

In rapid succession, the House got its first two Muslim women: Minnesota's Ilhan Omar and Michigan's Rashida Tlaib.

Ayanna Pressley, 44, on Tuesday became the first African American woman elected to Congress from MA, representing much of the same area as John F. Kennedy. Omar, who came to the U.S. as a refugee, will be the first Somali-American in Congress. Democrats Sharice Davids of Kansas and Debra Haaland of New Mexico became the first Native American women elected to Congress.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat, is now the youngest woman elected to Congress.

Sharice Davids of Kansas and Deb Haaland of New Mexico won their races, becoming the first Native American women in Congress. Davids racked up another distinction as the first openly LGBTQ person to represent Kansas.

Mourners arrive for the funeral ceremony of Leicester City's owner
Goals from Erik Lamela and Harry Kane put Spurs 3-0 up before penalties from Ruben Neves and Raul Jimenez gave the Wolves hope. At Dean Court, Marcus Rashford's close-range finish in stoppage-time helped Manchester United hit back to win 2-1.

There was also a historic gender gap that showed women more supportive of Democrats than Republicans. Stacey Abrams, one of 16 women running for governor this year, remains in a tight contest in Georgia. In 1982, 58 per cent of women voted for Democrats and 41 per cent voted for Republicans.

Democratic senators Claire McCaskill of Missouri and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota lost their races, while Republican representative Marsha Blackburn became the first woman elected to the US Senate from Tennessee.

This year's swing was, in large part, because of independent women, who voted for Democratic candidates for the House, 56 per cent to 39 per cent, as well as white women, who have started voting differently in recent years, according to CNN's exit poll data.

Jahana Hayes similarly will join the freshman class as Connecticut's first black female representative.

IL state Rep. Juliana Stratton is the first black woman elected as IL lieutenant governor.

The victory made her the national face of young, discontented Democrats - often women and minorities - trying to drag their party to the left.

Liberal groups heralded the positive impact women had on the election and said it will be felt on the legislation front as well after the new U.S. Congress convenes next year. There was a mix of people of all ages (including one girl genuinely thrilled to be spending her fourth birthday at the event), but overwhelmingly, the staff and volunteers and interns and supporters were young people, many of whom were engaging in politics for the first time and were so excited to be there, and so proud of the work they put in. According to data compiled by The Associated Press, 237 women ran for the House as major-party candidates this year.
