3 Girl Scouts, 1 Woman Killed in Wisconsin Hit-and-Run

This photo provided by the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office in Wisconsin shows Colten Treu, who is accused of striking and killing three Girl Scouts and a parent and critically injuring a fourth girl near Chippewa Falls, Wis., Nov. 3, 2018.

The driver, 21-year-old Colten Treu, later surrendered to authorities after police launched a search for the vehicle.

The grandmother of one of three Girl Scouts killed in a Wisconsin hit-and-run crash says the child dreamed of being an animator and shared a love of crafts with her mom, who also died in the accident.

Two girls and a chaperone were killed on the roadside, according to the Lake Hallie Police Department, which is investigating. They've been identified as 9-year-old Jayna Kelley, 10-year-old Autumn Helgeson, 10-year-old Haylee Hickle and her 32-year-old mother, Sara Jo Schneider.

According to police, the driver was huffing when the crash happened; it's when someone intentionally inhales chemical vapors.

He is being held in the Chippewa County jail on 13 criminal charges. Colton Treu, 21, made an initial court appearance Monday morning. Other members of the troop were picking up trash from the opposite shoulder.

Treu and the passenger were not there.

The victims were among seven children and five adults who were working in the ditches along the roadway.

Three girl scouts have been killed after they were hit by a truck while picking up litter. "The Girl Scout Movement everywhere stands with our sister Girl Scouts in Wisconsin to grieve and comfort one another in the wake of this bad tragedy".

Police say a pickup truck veered off the road into a ditch and struck the victims as they picked up trash Saturday. He is expected to appear for a bond hearing at 10 a.m. Monday, Jensen said.

Eliopoulos confirmed another girl is in critical condition. Treu sped away from the scene, but later turned himself in.

No attorney who can speak for Treu was identified Sunday.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families, friends, fellow students, fellow scouts and everyone else impacted by this", the Chippewa Falls Police Department said.

'Our hearts are broken for the girls and families of the Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes, ' CEO Sylvia Acevedo of Girl Scouts of the United States of America said in a statement Sunday.

The girls were fourth-graders and members of Troop 3055 in nearby Chippewa Falls, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) east of Minneapolis.

Sgt. Daniel Sokup of the Lake Hallie Police Department told the Associated Press that the man will be charged with four counts of homicide through the negligent use of a vehicle.
