Djokovic marks return to world number one with Paris win

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic has hailed his climb back to the top of men's tennis, which will see him return to world No.1 spot next week, as a "phenomenal achievement".

The return of Djokovic at the first line in the ATP ranking was the natural completion of his flawless game in the second half of the season.

Djokovic, who knew on Wednesday he would be world No.1 next week after Rafael Nadal's withdrawal from the tournament through injury, was leading 6-1 2-1 when Bosnian Dzhumur retired at 6-1 2-1 after succumbing to a back problem.

"Reflecting on what I've been through in the past year, it's quite a phenomenal achievement", said Djokovic who will face Marin Cilic for a spot in the semi-finals.

When asked about the London finals he added: "I am very sorry but I can not answer you".

"I always believe in myself but, five months ago, if you'd told me I would be back to No.1 so quickly, it was highly improbable considering my ranking and the way I played and felt on the court".

Djokovic, who will reclaim the No. 1 ranking next week regardless of where he finishes, faces Marin Cilic in the quarterfinals. "I'm looking forward to it".

Cilic, who has beaten Djokovic just twice in 17 meetings, ended reigning ATP Finals champion Dimitrov's season.

Trump to visit Pittsburgh after synagogue shooting
Eleven worshippers ages 54-97 were gunned down, including a husband and wife and two brothers. "He's some mother's son". Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto said he was also against Trump's visit because it would coincide with the first funerals .

With the season-ending ATP Finals in London starting November 11, he is playing three straight tournaments. There were doubts Federer would play after a grueling past week that saw him clinch his ninth victory at the Swiss Indoors and 99th overall.

"I feel like it's better for me to play matches rather than practice", Federer said.

Federer enjoyed a walkover into the third round when Milos Raonic pulled out with an injury.

The 10th-seeded Nishikori did not face break points in beating the seventh-seeded Anderson - the Wimbledon runner-up to Djokovic - 6-4, 6-4.

Roger Federer made a comfortable start to his quest for a 100th title, dispatching Fabio Fognini in straight sets. Fernando Verdasco, who reached the quarter-finals previous year, produced a clinical display to defeat Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-4, 6-4.

Fourth seed Alexander Zverev also cruised into the last eight with a 6-4 6-2 win over Diego Schwartzman.

Austrian sixth seed Dominic Thiem reached the quarter-finals in Paris for the first time, seeing off in-form Borna Coric 6-7 (3/7), 6-2, 7-5.
