Nine children reported dead at New Jersey facility after contracting virus

Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation

On Friday, an eighth child was confirmed dead following the viral outbreak, but officials say they do not now have laboratory confirmation of adenovirus in this child that's killed other pediatric patients at the facility.

The "medically fragile" child, whose identity was not made public, died late Saturday at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, N.J., just one day after the facility's eighth death.

The Health Department said in a statement Monday the new diagnosis brings the total number of adenovirus cases at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation to 26.

Health commissioner Dr Shereef Elnahal said the first symptoms showed at the centre on 26 September, and the state was notified of an outbreak 9 October.

"The Department continues to work very closely with the facility to ensure that all infection control measures are being followed", the Wanaque facility said in a statement Wednesday. A staff member at the facility who has since recovered also became ill.

Those affected range in age from toddlers to young adults, with the vast majority under the age of 18.

Eight deaths at the facility have been confirmed as adenovirus-related.

The health department said this week the facility had been "instructed not to admit any new patients until the outbreak ends and they are in full compliance".

The strain found in the rehab center outbreak - type 7 - is among the more potent types and sometimes causes more serious respiratory illness, especially among those with weak immune systems.

Adenovirus usually poses little risk for healthy people.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control was assisting state health officials with testing and "expertise", according to the New Jersey Department.

A ninth child has died at a pediatric rehabilitation center in New Jersey due to an outbreak of a respiratory virus, officials announced Sunday.

Adenovirus causes severe flu-like symptoms but can be even more risky than the typical flu virus.

The viruses, unlike the flu, are not seasonal and can cause illness throughout the year. They tend to be spread by coughing and sneezing, direct contact with an infected person, or touching objects and surfaces, such as door handles and light switches, where the viruses can live and remain infectious for days or weeks.

Adenovirus is a respiratory disease with symptoms that may include a sore throat, pneumonia, diarrhea, pink eye, fever, and inflammation of the stomach and intestines.

"Am I angry? I think what it is I need to know information, I like facts", Poulous told WABC.
