Soon at BRICS high table, a far right populist

Supporters of Jair Bolsonaro far-right lawmaker and presidential candidate of the Social Liberal Party, react after Bolsonaro wins

While French leftists say Mr Bolsonaro's election win is a body blow for democracy, the French far-right sees his win as a victory for nationalists all around the world.

Outside his beach condo in a rich enclave of Rio de Janeiro, the national anthem played, and yellow-and-green clad supporters embraced. It's one of the reasons why so many former voters of the left are turning to the far-right in these elections because they feel that they have betrayed by their leaders and it is a powerful feeling.

"Fascists!" shouted tearful supporters at the headquarters of Haddad's Workers' Party in Sao Paulo.

Bolsonaro made his own final pitch on social media, the only place he has campaigned since an attacker stabbed him in the stomach at a rally last month, sending him to the hospital for three weeks.

"God willing, (it) will be our new independence day", he tweeted.

Supporters celebrated in the streets, setting off fireworks at Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana beach, and in Sao Paulo they gathered on the central avenue with banners and flags.

She also interpreted the results as a rebuke by Brazilians of "the widespread corruption and terrifying crime that flourished under far-left governments". The people have spoken.

But suggestions of "a coup, shutting down congress and summoning tanks" - all of which Bolsonaro advocated earlier in his career - are exaggerated, Jairo Nicolau, a political scientist at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, tells TIME.

He will take charge as President on January 1, 2019. "We are going to change the destiny of Brazil", he said in his acceptance speech, Reuters reported.

The speech was also marked by more divisive moments: he pledged to govern "following the Bible and the constitution", and said "we can not continue flirting with socialism, with communism, populism and the extremism of the left".

Mourinho and Man Utd players fed-up with lack of board support
United, who bought the forward for £75 million, need him to rediscover his spark on the field in order to rekindle their 2018-19 campaign.

The election of Bolsonaro has also led to trepidation among many minorities and campaigners whom he has stigmatized in the past - from members of the gay community to those who campaign for environmental protections and for justice for the abuses of Brazil's dictatorship.

However, the extent to which the state controls their core activities is still a matter of debate between his top economic adviser, pro-privatisation Paulo Guedes, and the retired generals who backed his presidential bid. His propensity for shocking, offensive, and violent comments is no secret: After being accused of making comments that encouraged rape in 2014, Bolsonaro retaliated by claiming another congresswoman was "not worth raping; she is very ugly".

But an even larger portion of voters reject Haddad and the tarnished legacy of his Workers' Party. For a while, Lula, with a devoted following among the working classes, was frontrunner in the election - but this April, he was sent to jail for 12 years and ruled out of the contest.

Brazilian citizens who live in MA joined their fellow country-mates and headed to the polls Sunday to participate in the South American country's run-off presidential election.

The victor, who presented himself as "anti-system" despite being a legislator since 1991, is controversial for his insults to women, blacks and homosexuals, and for his praise of torture and the last Brazilian dictatorship (1964-1985).

Two years ago he commented that the dictatorship's mistake was "to torture and not kill" leftist dissidents, and during his campaign he vowed to send opponents "into exile or into prison".

His opponent Haddad did better in the Palestinian city of Ramallah, and in Havana, Berlin, Frankfurt, Paris and Moscow. Voting machines furnished by the Brazilian government were transported to Framingham to facilitate the election. Several key endorsements late Saturday gave Haddad's camp hope that they could still pull out a victory.

"It used to be people would actually vote for what they wanted, and not just against something", he said.

Gomes, a former governor of Ceará state in the northeast, is influential in Brazil's poorest region.

Bolsonaro, a former army captain with a lacklustre record in Congress over 27 years, rose in prominence amid disgust with Brazil's political system after a massive corruption scandal and a prolonged recession.
