Abe, Modi agree to step up defense, economic ties

PM Modi who arrived in Japan on Saturday to attend the 13th India Japan annual summit and held a series of meetings with top Japanese leaders and addressed the Indian community

This is the second big currency swap agreement between Asia's two biggest economies after Beijing and Tokyo signed $30 billion currency swap arrangement last Friday, aimed at enhancing financial stability and spurring business activities in both countries.

Modi has called for regional unity against protectionism.

At the lunch session, Abe and Modi affirmed Japan-India cooperation for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, according to sources with access to the meeting.

- Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian community in Japan for taking "brand India" to new heights by introducing cricket, Indian food and culture to the island nation.

On the economic front, while Islamabad has been a partner in China's Belt and Road Initiative, notably via the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), New Delhi - which fought a border war with Bejing in 1962 and still is still embroiled in related border disputes - has been wary about accepting Chinese capital.

Modi appreciated Japan's role in promoting connectivity through quality infrastructure projects such as the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor and the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor. "In Gujarat, Sardar sahab's statue - the tallest in the world is being built", said Modi addressing to Indian diaspora.

Mr Modi said, if people are able to see a United India now, it is entirely on account of the sagacity, sensibility, and strategic skills of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. On Sunday, he was invited to Abe's vacation home at a scenic resort in the shadow of Mount Fuji. The special reception was the first for any foreign leader to have visited Japan. "There are no negatives but only opportunities in this relationship which are waiting to be seized".

Abe and Modi also said they would conclude a $75 billion bilateral currency swap agreement and welcomed an agreement to deepen cooperation between their two navies. The Indian PM is one of the 18 persons Abe follows on Twitter.
