Palestinian militants fire rockets, Israel strikes Gaza

Israeli trucks carrying diesel fuel enter Kerem Shalom cargo crossing on the Israel Gaza border

Egyptian security officials have been talking separately to Israeli and Palestinian leaders in an attempt to restore calm along the border.

Reports Friday suggested a deal had been reached that would see the protests end in exchange for an easing of the blockade.

Israeli aircraft struck around 95 sites, including weapons manufacturing facilities and military compounds including Hamas's security services headquarters, it said.

IDF spokesman Ronen Manelis said on Saturday that Israel held Hamas responsible for the violence and that it was expected to have control over events in the Gaza Strip.

Any potential fighting between Israel and Iranian forces in Syria would be further complicated by the involvement of Russian Federation, which has backed the Syrian regime in the civil war. In response, Israel hit over 80 targets in Gaza. "The Islamic Jihad will abide by the cease-fire if the occupation (Israel) does the same". It accused the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Iran's Al- Quds Force of being behind the bombardments.

Israel's Iron Dome rocket-defence system intercepted 13 rockets, two landed in Gaza and the remainder fell in open spaces in southern Israel, according to Conricus.

Israel seldom acknowledges carrying out strikes in Syria, and it is practically unheard of for it to warn of those strikes in advance.

Gen. Ronen Manelis reiterated that Israel considers the terror group responsible as Gaza's rulers.

Israel and Russian Federation have maintained a hotline to prevent their air forces from coming into contact with one another over Syrian skies.

The bombing destroyed a site near the Indonesian hospital in the northern Gaza Strip, damaging the medical centre, the Ministry of Health said.

The sudden burst of fighting and bloodshed complicated the mission of Egyptian mediators, who have intensified shuttle diplomacy to achieve calm and prevent a full-blown conflict between Hamas and Israel. Other targets included the entrance to a tunnel dug to infiltrate and attack Israel, and an anti-aircraft observation post, it said. One Israeli soldier was shot dead by a sniper on the border.

"To what low have the terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip reached?" wrote COGAT commander, Maj.

Palestinians gather at the Israel-Gaza fence during a protest calling for lifting the blockade on Gaza, in Gaza, October 26, 2018.

On Sunday, Israel reopened the people and goods border crossings with Gaza and on Wednesday renewed the flow of Qatar-funded fuel to the Palestinian enclave, in an indication of its confidence that Hamas would rein in violence. The territory suffers from chronic power outages.

Confrontations between Gaza and Israel began escalating in late March after Palestinians launched a campaign of weekly Friday protests against Israel.

Shehab said "After contacts between the Islamic Jihad leadership and the brothers in Egypt it was agreed that a comprehensive ceasefire will begin immediately".

Israel said its forces were attacked with explosive devices and some demonstrators breached the border.

Israel has come under heavy worldwide criticism for what many see as excessive use of force and the large number of unarmed people who have been shot.

On Wednesday, Egyptian intelligence officials met representatives of Palestinian factions in Gaza.

Hamas has demanded a full lifting of the blockade, which has made it increasingly hard for Hamas to govern.

About 2 million Palestinians are packed into the Gaza Strip, which is in a deep economic crisis.
