Pakistan beat Australia by 66 runs in first T20

Fakhar Zaman

Imad Wasim grabbed 3-20 on his return to worldwide cricket after nearly one year out to help Pakistan earn an emphatic 66-run win over Australia in the first Twenty20 on Wednesday.

Put into bat, Pakistan lost opener Fakhar Zaman in the fifth over after he edged it to Nathan Coulter-Nile at short cover off Billy Stanlake.

Wasim, who was making his worldwide return after a year, removed the openers in his first over and came back later to get the wicket of Alex Carey, as Australia were bowled out for 89 in 16.5 overs and lost the match by 66 runs. Faheem Ashraf (2/10) and Shaheen Afridi (2/23) shared four wickets between them. Leg spinner Shadab Khan missed the test series against Australia due to fitness issues but has recovered and was picked for the Wednesday's game.

Australia were skittled out for 89 in 16.5 overs - their joint-third lowest T20 score - as Pakistan registered their biggest T20 victory over Australia and improved upon the 45-run win they achieved in July at Harare. "It was carnage. It was like a vehicle crash in slow motion", Finch told reporters after his side crumbled at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium. "I think when that many guys get bowled it's obviously alarming, particularly on a flat surface that didn't swing a hell of a lot". Including Hafeez's dismissal, Australia had hit back by picking up seven wickets for the addition of just 28 runs.

In response, Australia's chase got off to a disastrous start.

Billy Stanlake (3-21) and Andrew Tye (3-24) struck in quick succession, but Hasan Ali (17 not out) smashed two fours and a six in Coulter-Nile's last over which lifted the Pakistan total.

The unsafe Hafeez fell to D'Arcy Short when looking well set and Asif Ali was trapped leg before by Adam Zampa before Babar - who scored 99 in the second Test - launched Coulter-Nile for six over midwicket.

Finch said changes had to be considered for Friday's second T20 in Dubai, which will also host the third and final game on Sunday.

The experienced Shoaib Malik will miss the first T20I while Imad Wasim, who has been out of the team for injury issues, will again be seen in action.
