Utah Utes track athlete Lauren McCluskey shot and killed

Lauren McCluskey, who was found dead in her auto Monday night, was on the phone with her mother just before the shooting, Jill McCluskey said. She then filed harassment reports to the campus police on October 12 and 13. McCluskey was found shot in a auto Monday night near on-campus student housing. McCluskey also said that Rowland harassed her daughter after the breakup. The alleged killer, Melvin Rowland has been found dead by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Utah corrections and parole officials have launched investigations about the release of a sex offender who killed a University of Utah student after they briefly dated.

"The Pac-12 Conference joins the University of Utah and our entire conference community in mourning the loss of Lauren McCluskey, and expressing our deepest condolences to her family", read a statement from the Pac-12, reported the network.

Lindsey Harrison, a freshman at the U who was locked in her dorm room for two hours while police searched for Rowland, said that the scariest part of the shooting was the feeling that it was normal.

McCluskey made her mark at as a track star at Pullman High School, where she eventually became a state champion in the high jump and school record-holder in the 100-meter-hurdle.

"She was just genuine and sweet and she had a relentless determination at practice that showed up every day", Kepler said.

The victim, who did not wish to be named, told KSTU that she met 37-year-old Melvin Rowland in May when he was working as a bouncer at a bar called Maxwell's in Salt Lake City.

In a statement, Jill McCluskey said she was on the phone with her daughter as she walked on campus Monday night. The suspect believed to be responsible for her death was found dead a short time later at an off-campus location.

According to a statement from the woman's mother, McCluskey previously dated Rowland for about one month.

"Lauren was a senior student athlete on the University of Utah track team".

University President Ruth Watkins said classes were cancelled Tuesday and a vigil would be held Wednesday night. They lifted the lockdown about 11:50 p.m. Monday.

Early Tuesday, Salt Lake City Police saw Rowland in downtown Salt Lake City and briefly chased him, Brophy said. Wahlin says the man they are searching for and the student had "a previous relationship". The university described the suspect as a black man, 37 years old, 6-foot, 3 inches, 250 pounds, wearing a gray beanie, black trousers, white shoes and a white hoodie.

The university also tweeted, "Shooting suspect still on foot".

"Last night, the University of Utah lost one of our own". Austin Boutain, 25, confessed to aggravated murder in September and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, according to CNN affiliate KUTV.

He and his wife were charged with hatching a carjacking plot that led to the death of Chenwei Guo.
