CNN wrote that Rome mayor Virginia Raggi expressed her solidarity to victims of the accident, adding that preliminary signs were that fans had been jumping and dancing on the escalator.

The station was full of Russian fans headed towards Rome's Olympic Stadium where CSKA Moscow were to play AS Roma in the Champions League.

The incredible incident was caught on video and posted to Twitter by BNO News.

Reuters and the Italian newspaper La Repubblica are reporting that 20 Russian soccer fans have been injured in Rome when an escalator at a metro station broke and sped wildly out of control.

The accident happened in a metro stop near the main Termine train station.

Security camera footage showed a panel in the floor giving way as the woman stepped off the escalator.

About 1,500 CSKA fans were attending the match. "People one on the top of the other looking for help", he said. One of the injured had his leg amputated. "They had various injuries caused by the escalator that was twisted, therefore serious injuries".

Emergency services were at the scene and the station was closed, Italian news agency Ansa reported.
