Jamie Lee Curtis Celebrates 'Halloween' Box Office Success

An actor dressed as the character of Michael Myers attends the Universal

In his brilliant turn-of-the-century documentary The American Nightmare, Adam Simon located John Carpenter's 1978 Halloween as the end point of a decade of countercultural horror movies. That's the second-best October opening of all time, behind only Venom, which opened earlier this month to the tune of $80 million.

A string of inferior sequels and reboots followed Carpenter's low-budget hit, from Rick Rosenthal's 1981 Halloween II (written by original screenwriters Carpenter and Debra Hill) to Rob Zombie's dreary 2007 "reimagining" and its dispiriting follow-up.

Indie Box Office: Mid90s, Wildlife, Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Not to mention that it was the most profitable "Halloween" opening among the franchise's 11 entries, and the second-highest debut for any film (in any genre) released in October.

In high spirits after Halloween's box office success - the $US10 million ($14.1 million) film took a better-than-expected $US77.5 million before its Australian opening on Thursday - Curtis noted that it had the best opening weekend for a horror movie with a female star.

Jamie Lee Curtis smashes box office records, tweets the ideal reaction
Cast member Jamie Lee Curtis poses at a premiere for the movie " Halloween " in Los Angeles, California, U.S., October 17, 2018. Carpenter served as an executive producer and composed the score with his son, Cody Carpenter, and godson, Daniel Davies.

"Halloween", which is a direct follow-up to the original "Halloween" and skips over the sequels in between, has been well-received by critics, with an 80 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. On a $10 million budget, the film earned a total of $91.8 million, including global openings.

That's exactly what Jamie Lee Curtis rightfully did when her movie smashed three, yes THREE, box office records. A Star is Born continues to have incredible legs, jumping above Venom and staying in second place with only a 32.2% drop from last weekend.

20th Century Fox's adaptaion of the book The Hate U Give opened in wide release and took in $7.5 million across 2300 theaters (an expansion of two thousand new screens). The film totaled $8.6 million on its second weekend in cinemas and ended up in a awful fifth place behind Goosebumps 2.

With 10 days to go until the holiday, including another weekend, the studio expects "Halloween" to enjoy a much longer life than typical horror films that usually drop off significantly after the first weekend. The film has now brought in $10.6 million at the domestic box office.
