Trump says Saudi should be presumed innocent over disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi

Trump ‘Rogue killers’ may be to blame for Saudi writer’s death

Despite Western concerns about Saudi Arabia's human rights record, Trump still says he is unwilling to pull out of weapons sales agreements with Riyadh. Turkish officials said they fear Khashoggi was killed and dismembered inside the consulate. The official spoke on condition of anonymity as the investigation was ongoing.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo landed Tuesday in Riyadh to meet Saudi leaders over the suspected murder of one of the kingdom's most prominent critics. The former Central Intelligence Agency chief didn't make any remarks to the media.

Earlier, President Donald Trump gave Saudi Arabia the benefit of the doubt in Khashoggi's disappearance, while United States lawmakers pointed the finger at the Saudi leadership and Western pressure mounted on Riyadh to provide answers.

Pompeo then met a smiling Prince Mohammed, the 33-year-old heir apparent to the throne of the world's largest oil exporter.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is meeting now with Saudi King Salman over the disappearance of Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi.

"Canada has raised the issue directly with Saudi Arabia and we are talking about the issue with our allies", Freeland said Tuesday during a question and answer session at the Fortune Global Forum in Toronto.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham said he would "sanction the hell" out of Saudi Arabia and had harsh words for Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the man alleged to have ordered the interrogation and killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul.

Speaking from the airport in Ankara, Mevlut Cavusoglu said talks with Pompeo were "beneficial and fruitful". "The king firmly denied any knowledge of it". Maybe - I - I don't want to get into his mind, but it sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers. He said Mr. Trump "should not have said that". "We're going to try getting to the bottom of it very soon, but his was a flat denial".

Left unsaid was the fact that any decision in the ultraconservative kingdom rests exclusively with the ruling Al Saud family.

Agency: 11 Baby Bodies Found in Closed Detroit Funeral Home
A cadaver dog from Michigan State Police checked the rest of the building and did not find any more remains, police said. At the time of the discovery, construction was underway to convert the funeral home into a community center.

Pompeo was to have a dinner Tuesday night with Prince Mohammed and was expected to fly to Turkey on Wednesday.

Freeland said she's been in regular contact with her Saudi counterpart, but she had nothing new to report on Tuesday.

Saudi authorities could not be reached for comment.

Khashoggi disappeared two weeks ago at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul. That convention covers diplomatic immunity, as well as the idea that embassies and consulates sit on foreign soil in their host countries.

Turkish authorities have an audio recording indicating that Khashoggi was killed in the consulate, Turkish sources have told Reuters.

Turkish officials said, overall, there are 15 suspects, ten of whom still need to be identified.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters the investigation "was looking into many things such as toxic materials and those materials being removed by painting them over". The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government regulations, gave no timeline for the search.

Prince Mohammed has aggressively pitched the kingdom as a destination for foreign investment.
