Looters target Florida homes left in dark from Hurricane Michael, authorities say

A single home remarkably left standing on Florida's Mexico Beach after Hurricane Michael might very well become a prototype for how to build on the coast in the decades to come.

Scott directed Florida's Insurance Commissioner David Altmaier to freeze property insurance rates for 90 days as businesses and residents recover from the hurricane, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

Pai said that he has had regular contact with cellphone companies and that he is concerned that they have not acted with urgency. But Pai wants more. I'm joining @FLGovScott in calling on wireless carriers to waive October bills for those in affected areas & to let them to change carriers without penalty. In addition, I have directed our Public Safety & Homeland Security Bureau to promptly initiate an investigation into this matter.

In total, the storm has killed 29 people across four Southern US states, officials said.

AT&T told Ars that its pre-storm preparations allowed it to "keep our customers, including first responders, connected during and after the storm in many areas".

At least 27 deaths have been blamed on the hurricane across four USA states - a number expected to increase further.

Scott met with Gadsden County officials and "again expresse [d] frustration with Verizon's hurricane response and sa [id] customers should be released from contracts so they can get service from AT&T", Tallahassee Bureau Chief Steve Bousquet of the Tampa Bay Times tweeted today.

AT&T also said that it is "extending credits and waiving overage charges to provide unlimited talk, text and data for AT&T Wireless and AT&T Prepaid in some of the hardest hit areas" from October 10 to October 21 in select Florida counties.

German police seize man who took woman hostage in Cologne train station
Local media reported shots being fired inside the station, something which a police spokesperson later denied. She said: "We assume that a hostage has been taken, either at McDonald's or at a nearby pharmacy".

He noted on "America's News HQ" that thousands of crews in the area have been working to restore power and communications, "so that people can connect their family, and they can begin the recovery process".

Even though efforts to restore communications services have been going well in most of the areas affected by Hurricane Michael, the slow progress in restoring wireless service in areas close to where the hurricane made landfall is completely unacceptable. And in Jackson County, which borders Alabama and Georgia, about 83 percent were without power. "This free service is for both consumer and business accounts".

Most of the missing are said to be in Panama City and are elderly, disabled or live alone, co-founder of Houston-based CrowdSource Rescue Matthew Marchetti told the Reuters news agency.

Immediately after the hurricane, strangers came from out of town to provide food and water. "Crews continue their fiber fix work throughout the day today".

The AP's tally also includes 10 deaths in Virginia, Georgia and North Carolina.

Patronis is from Bay County and his family owns a restaurant in Panama City Beach. In a statement, Scott also called on telecommunications companies to make clear how they would help get service going again, and his office was sharply critical of the lingering outages affecting Floridians.

The company also said it is offering one month of free service to affected customers.

As for T-Mobile, the operator said its services had been nearly completely restored, and that it is offering "free calling/texting/data for active postpaid and prepaid customers who are not already on an unlimited plan".
