India elected to UN human rights body

India wins seat at United Nations Human Rights Council

India received 188 votes, the highest polled by any of the 18 countries elected from the 193-member General Assembly.

TWO days after the Philippines kept its seat at the United Nationals Human Rights Council (UNHRC), rights groups and lawmakers reiterated that its reelection was "not a badge of honor", but rather a responsibility. Nations required at least 97 votes to get chose to the Council. A total of 18 new members were elected by the absolute majority through a secret ballot.

India was vying for a seat in the Asia-Pacific category. Among the other candidates, Eritrea has obtained 160 votes, Somalia 170 votes and the Bangladesh 178 votes. Only four countries didn't vote for India, while one country abstained from taking part in the elections.

It makes recommendations on how to address human rights violations and has the ability to discuss all thematic human right issues and situations.

Bahrain has already been elected as a member of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) for the 2017-2021 term and the UN Women Executive Council (2017-2019).
