German police seize man who took woman hostage in Cologne train station

Police at Cologne station

Locally published newspaper the Koln Express reports a hostage was taken in a pharmacy inside the station and that fire engines were also called after officers responding to the incident smelt burning.

She said: "We assume that a hostage has been taken, either at McDonald's or at a nearby pharmacy".

Before police stormed the pharmacy, the entire train station, one of the biggest in Germany, was evacuated and all train traffic was stopped, leading to delays and cancelations across western Germany.

Local media reported shots being fired inside the station, something which a police spokesperson later denied.

Following a hours-long standoff, German police have finally apprehended an assailant who took hostage a woman near Cologne central station.

"Police commandos were deployed and the busy railway station was closed off to all passengers and trains".

German railroad operator Deutsche Bahn tweeted earlier that some of the station's tracks were shut down temporarily and trains were being canceled or delayed.

Ambulances and heavily-armed police were lined up in wait behind the train station.
