Senate Dems lose health care vote, hope it's campaign fodder

Brett Kavanaugh is the first member of the Supreme Court to hire an all-female class of law clerks

Now, particularly after the contentious Senate confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh, Democratic energy is up in the suburban districts that will determine the House majority - just as Republicans claim conservative voters have been jolted awake in rural states that will determine the Senate majority. But its ultimate impact remains uncertain.

The Kavanaugh case now takes its place as one of the issues against President Trump and his Republican Party in the United States mid-term elections this November.

It's possible that events over the next few weeks will change that arithmetic, but for now, Republican net Senate gains seem more likely than Democratic gains.

The outlook in Texas and Tennessee is more bleak for Democrats. On leaving the Supreme Court, such a removed Justice may choose to accept and fill any vacant Article III judgeship, without further nomination to that particular judgeship by the President and without the advice and consent of the Senate.

- Larry Sabato's Crystal Ball (UVA Center for Politics): North Dakota moves from "Toss-up" to "Leans Republican"; gives GOP "a clearer edge" of keeping control of Senate to Republicans. "We will increase our majorities".

He said Kavanaugh had been found "innocent" of the charges against him, even though the senators came to no such determination.

I believe that the bi-furcation between The Trump Administration and the GOP leaders in the Congress who treated Ms. Ford allegations seriously, and the bulk of the Democrats exploding in wrathful endorsement of conviction-by-denunciation, will tip the political scales for the Republicans in midterm elections. "I speak up when I think it's necessary".

The dissatisfaction with Kavanaugh is driven by American women - which is hardly surprising, given his likely role in undermining women's reproductive freedoms in the country and the multiple allegations of sexual abuse and misconduct against him. The Senate Judiciary Committee is poised to forward nine nominations to the full Senate for final confirmation on Thursday, and a confirmation hearing for lower court nominees is scheduled for October 17.

"One key facet of the independence of the judiciary is not to make commitments on particular cases", including on recusal, Kavanaugh told Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal.

"We have lifted the voices of millions of survivors of sexual assault".

A rally ahead of the "Women's March to the Polls" started under crisp, sunny skies about 10 a.m.in Grant Park near Columbus and Jackson.

And other Democrats warned the intensity of the protests will spill over into the November elections.

"When they go low, we kick them", former Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. says after a clip of a pro-life protester is kicked in the face by an abortion activist. Harris and Warren are both potential presidential contenders in 2020.

The person who will most influence the answer to that question is Chief Justice John Roberts. If Republicans gain two or more, they will have strengthened their control over the Senate.

Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., arrives before a vote to advance Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court, on Capitol Hill, Oct. 5, 2018 in Washington.

Kavanaugh officially became a member of the high court Saturday and has already been at work preparing for his first day on the bench Tuesday.

Trump has now put his stamp on the court with his second justice in as many years.

McConnell said he's hoping to persuade more Republican women to join the committee but hasn't had much success in the past because "they just haven't been interested".

The campaign against Kavanaugh had been based on "lies", including by "evil" people.
