Turkey Will Investigate Saudi Consulate After Man Disappears

AP Analysis: Missing writer shows Saudi Arabia’s dark side

During a United Nations briefing on Tuesday in Geneva, Shamdasani said that the rights office is urging Turkey and Saudi Arabia to cooperate and conduct an "impartial and independent investigation" into Khashoggi's disappearance in Istanbul, and "to make the findings public".

Trump said Monday that he was "concerned" about reports of Khashoggi's disappearance.

US President Donald Trump speaks as he arrives at the White House in Washington, DC, on October 8, 2018. 'I don't like hearing about it and hopefully that will sort itself out.

A statement released by the state-run Saudi Press Agency (SPA) cited a diplomatic officer who categorically denied "these baseless allegations, and expressed his doubt that they came from Turkish officials that are informed of the investigation or are authorized to comment on the issue", reports Efe news.

Turkey said on Tuesday it planned to search Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul, where Khashoggi vanished last week after entering the building to request paperwork. That's according to NBC news who said friends of the missing journalist said it prompted concerns that he was being lured into a trap. Saudi officials insisted he left the building through another exit, but have not provided public evidence to prove it.

His fiancée, waiting outside, said he never emerged and Turkish sources said they believe Khashoggi, a prominent critic of Saudi policies, was killed inside the mission. He entered the consulate in Istanbul last Tuesday to get documents for his forthcoming marriage.

On Monday Turkey asked for permission to search Saudi Arabia's consulate for Khashoggi.

A Turkish government source has said that police believe the journalist was murdered, a claim denied by Riyadh.

As a contributor to the Post, Khashoggi has written extensively about Saudi Arabia, including criticism of its war in Yemen, its recent diplomatic spat with Canada and its arrest of women's rights activists after the lifting of a ban on women driving.

Anti-Abortion Groups Are Celebrating Kavanaugh Confirmation
Trump's comments came two days after the Senate narrowly confirmed Kavanaugh for the high court. The ceremonial follow-up event is fairly unusual for new justices.

The U.S.is concerned about Khashoggi's whereabouts, Nauert said, and would like to see the Saudi government conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into what happened to him.

Meanwhile, Turkish authorities are scouring motorway camera footage in the hopes of finding a black van they suspect carried Khashoggi's body out of the consulate.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on Saudi Arabia to prove he left the consulate alive.

Khashoggi, who fled Saudi Arabia previous year to go into self-imposed exile in the USA, had always been critical of the Saudi regime. Relations were already strained after Turkey sent troops to the Gulf state of Qatar a year ago in a show of support after its Gulf neighbors, including Saudi Arabia, imposed an embargo on Doha.

Saudi Arabia to allow Turkey to search consulate for Jamal Khashoggi; State Department correspondent Rich Edson reports.

Turkish officials say they fear Saudi Arabia killed and dismembered Khashoggi, without offering evidence explaining why they believe that.

Trump said he had spoken with the Saudis about what he called a "bad situation", but he did not disclose details of his conversations.

The Turkish security establishment concluded Khashoggi's killing was directed from the top because only the most senior Saudi leaders could order an operation of such scale and complexity, the Times' source said. He also said the USA was working "very closely" with Turkey, "and I think we'll get to the bottom of it".

'At this time, I implore President Trump and first lady Melania Trump to help shed light on Jamal's disappearance, ' she wrote.
