Google+ Shutting Down After Bug Leaks Info of 500k Accounts

Google shuts down Google+ after a massive data breach which potentially leaked information of over 500,000 users

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Google accidentally leaked the private data of hundreds of thousands of Google+ users between 2015 and March of this year.

However, Google says that there is no evidence that any third-party developers were aware of the bug or abused it.

The data exposed included full names, email addresses, birth dates, gender, profile pictures, places lived, occupations and relationship status.

Google also announced that, "we can not confirm which users were impacted by this bug".

Google admitted in the blog post disclosing the bug that usage of Google+ has dropped off in recent years.

To save any of the data you shared on your Google+ account, including photos, visit Google Takeout's Download Your Data page, select Google+ (and any other Google products where you'd like an archive of your data). "None of those thresholds were met here", he said.

The next round of jobs data will come four days before Election Day, by which point most voters' minds may be made up. Job gains occurred in professional and business services, in health care, and in transportation and warehousing.

A major security bug appears to also be to blame for the Google+ shutdown. This bug could allow a user's installed apps to utilize the API and access non-public information belonging to that user's friends.

Google plans to shutter its Google+ social network for consumers, citing its limited adoption with users.

Despite the size of the security flaw, Google executives opted not to disclose the problem at the time because they feared trouble from regulators after the intense criticism encountered by Facebook over its privacy woes, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Allegations of the improper use of data for 87 million Facebook users by Cambridge Analytica, which was hired by US President Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign, has hurt the shares of the world's biggest social network and prompted multiple official investigations in the United States and Europe. As a result, all European Union data protection authorities have jurisdiction to engage with Google on the breach.

For Gmail apps requesting permission to user data Google will only grant access to apps which 'directly enhancing email functionality-such as email clients, email backup services and productivity services (e.g., CRM and mail merge services)'. Contact interaction data will no longer be available via the Android Contacts API either.

Google goes "beyond legal requirements" and applies "several criteria focused on our users" when deciding whether to provide notice, a spokesperson said in a statement.
