Brett Kavanaugh sworn in as 114th Supreme Court Justice

Watch live: Final Senate vote on Kavanaugh nomination

Jewish Republicans lauded the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court Saturday, as the GOP celebrated a victory for President Donald Trump that managed to unite much of the party and will likely swing the highest bench in the land to the right. "We spoke to a gal who does not support Kavanaugh and had a good discussion with her, very respectful".

In Indiana, Democratic incumbent Joe Donnelly, who voted against Kavanaugh, now tops Republican challenger Mike Braun by two points (43-41 percent), according to the latest Fox News polling.

But the Kavanaugh spectacle, fuelled by extraordinary accusations and counter-claims in nationally televised hearings, and tense battles over an 11th-hour FBI investigation to address the assault allegations, has inflamed political passions. The vote unfolded with protesters shouting from the gallery. And she said numerous demonstrators, regardless of their opinions about the Supreme Court nominee, shared a common sentiment: They don't feel their voices are being heard. The judge has vehemently denied the allegations.

Manchin was the first Democrat to agree to meet with Kavanaugh on Capitol Hill, and he has repeatedly said that he wanted to carefully analyze the FBI's supplemental background check on Kavanaugh before casting his vote.

All but one Republican senators are expected to vote for Kavanaugh, and all but on Democratic senators are expected to vote against.

Kavanaugh's nomination seals a conservative majority on the nine-seat high court, possibly for decades to come.

Speaking to reporters near the Great Sphinx, she says she's glad that both Kavanaugh and his accuser, Christine Blasey (BLAH'-zee) Ford, were heard.

Trump also said women, far from being outraged at Kavanaugh, "were outraged at what happened to Brett Kavanaugh, outraged". I don't know by whom.

It was not clear that Kavanaugh would have the votes for confirmation until Collins said in a Senate floor speech that she would support his nomination.

Flake Is Officially a 'Yes' on Kavanaugh
In a second tweet , she cautioned that she was "not making any announcements" but was "deeply disappointed" in Collins' vote. Collins and Murkowski are the only GOP senators who support abortion rights, a crucial issue in the Kavanaugh debate.

Kavanaugh, in an opinion piece published this week in The Wall Street Journal, said he views his role as a judge as that of "an umpire - a neutral and impartial arbiter who favors no political party, litigant or policy".

In Washington, President Donald Trump said Saturday that he thought Collins was "incredible" and that she "gave an impassioned, lovely speech".

Last month, before the Kavanaugh confirmation focused primarily on how to weigh the lurid and uncorroborated sexual misconduct allegations againts the nominee, Cramer was up by only 4 points (48-44 percent).

Ohio Gov. John Kasich, himself a former presidential candidate, said about Judge Kavanaugh's confirmation: "America may have gained a new member of the Supreme Court, but a part of our nation's soul was lost during this toxic process".

Republicans rebutted the attacks of Democrats, saying there was nothing in the hearings - or in the extra Federal Bureau of Investigation interviews - which should disqualify the circuit court of appeals judge from joining the Supreme Court.

"I want to thank the mob, because they've done the one thing we were having trouble doing, which was energizing our base", he said.

One of those women, Debbie Ramirez, a classmate of Kavanaugh's at Yale University in the 1980s, issued a statement on Saturday saying that as she watched the Senate debate, "I feel like I'm right back at Yale where half the room is laughing and looking the other way".

But the fight was defined by the sexual assault accusations.

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh leaves his home after being confirmed by the U.S. Senate October 6, 2018 in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
