Anti-Abortion Groups Are Celebrating Kavanaugh Confirmation

Protesters against US Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh demonstrate at the high court in Washington ahead of his confirmation

Republicans are upbeat about their chances of holding on to their (razor thin) Senate majority in the USA midterm elections after the Brett Kavanaugh firestorm and are pointing to internal polling that proves the acrimonius battle for the Supreme Court pick has only boosted the party's chances in the short term and made the elections something more than just about Donald Trump - which is a big deal.

Speaking to reporters before departing for a speech in Florida on Monday, Trump said the allegations of sexual misconduct against Kavanaugh were "all made up, it was fabricated and it's a disgrace".

His nomination was thrown into turmoil in the three weeks preceding the vote after university professor Christine Blasey Ford accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her at a suburban Washington house party more than three decades ago when both were teenagers.

The ranking member of the House judiciary committee, Jerry Nadler of NY, has said his party would investigate the sexual misconduct allegations against Kavanaugh if the Democrats reclaim the majority in the chamber.

He predicted during his morning White Hous departure that midterm voters will reward Republican lawmakers who supported Kavanaugh, defying conventional wisdom that suggests Democrats have momentum fueled by resentful protesters. Heitkamp said she was concerned about Kavanaugh's temperament after his emotional performance before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The ceremonial follow-up event is fairly unusual for new justices.

Trump's comments came two days after the Senate narrowly confirmed Kavanaugh for the high court. All but one Democrat opposed Kavanaugh.

Even before the allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced, some Democrats questioned Kavanaugh's truthfulness during his initial Senate confirmation hearing. Kavanaugh already has been at the Supreme Court preparing for his first day on the bench Tuesday.

"You, sir, under historic scrutiny, were proven innocent", Trump said to Kavanaugh. I mean, who would have thought a thing like that could have happened, what he's been through?

Kavanaugh showed himself to be a severe partisan, and Collins, in effect, endorsed that partisanship when she voted to put him on the Supreme Court.

Later, in Orlando, he called Kavanaugh "a flawless person".

"I think a lot of Democrats are going to vote Republican", the president said, adding: "I have many friends that are Democrats".

Trump said the ceremony would be "very special" and a "big night". "It was a disgraceful situation brought about by people that are evil".

Trump has a busy campaign schedule to spread the word that the allegations against Kavanaugh were a "hoax that was set up by the Democrats" at what he's called a unsafe time for men who can be falsely accused.

The 53-year-old justice was sworn in on Saturday evening in a private ceremony at the Supreme Court.

"He's going to be a great Supreme Court justice - watch", he said.

United States President Donald Trump celebrated the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court at a rally in Kansas on Saturday, condemning Democrats for what he called a "shameless campaign of political and personal destruction" against Kavanaugh.
