Abubakar who has already run for the presidency four times has amassed a huge fortune in the import-export business as well as oil agriculture and telecommunications

Abubakar emerged as the candidate at the National Convention of the party on Sunday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

He has long enjoyed support from the business elite in Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos for his conservative-capitalist ideals and, as vice president in a PDP administration from 1999-2007, implemented a programme of liberalisation in areas including the telecoms sector.

Port Harcourt streets had been festooned with conference banners, while police said thousands of officers were deployed to the PDP primary.
