Flake Is Officially a 'Yes' on Kavanaugh

Sen. Lisa Murkowski R-Alaska is one of the senators who have not announced a decision on Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court

In the end, Collins announced she would vote to confirm Kavanaugh, all but ensuring he will end up on the court. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., sat directly in front of Collins and pivoted his seat around to face her. "Therefore, I do not believe that these charges can fairly prevent Judge Kavanaugh from serving on the court".

Collins and Murkowski are the only GOP senators who support abortion rights, a crucial issue in the Kavanaugh debate. They were discussing Turner's sentencing when Ford revealed she was assaulted. "Her goal wasn't to derail this nomination, it was to inform the nomination and she's done that".

Republicans control the Senate by a 51-49 margin, and Saturday's roll call vote seems destined to be almost party-line, with just a single defector from each side.

In the past two years, she played coy on whether she would vote for Donald Trump (she did not), whether she would vote to keep the Affordable Care Act (she did), and whether she would vote for a major tax reform bill (she agreed to it at the last minute).

Kavanaugh, who now sits on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals and previously worked for the independent counsel's office during the investigation of President Bill Clinton, described opposition to his nomination as "revenge on behalf of the Clintons".

U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh arrives for his Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing in Washington, U.S., September 27, 2018.

In a speech leading up to the vote, Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen.

Kavanaugh's contentious confirmation process has drawn protesters from across the country.

"If Democrats regain power in either chamber of Congress, they must resolve to reopen the investigations that Republicans refused to conduct and demand the documents that the Trump White House worked to hide".

At one point, Murkowski told reporters it was "the most hard evaluation of a decision that I've ever had to make".

Murkowski also rendered her decision Friday in dramatic fashion. Republican Morrisey has been vocal in recent days about Manchin's indecisiveness regarding Kavanaugh. In a second tweet, she cautioned that she was "not making any announcements" but was "deeply disappointed" in Collins' vote. Both nodded eagerly in agreement with the other.

Gonzaga law professors Ann Murphy, Jane Korn and Mary Pat Treauthart said they found Kavanaugh's anger and response to senators' questions troubling.

"My heart goes out to anyone who has experienced any type of sexual assault in their life".

Senators had one day to review a confidential supplemental background check into Kavanaugh's behavior in the early- to mid-1980s when he was in high school and college.

Britain is preparing new proposal on Irish border: UK PM May
This was despite the Tory leader's team meticulously putting together a media plan to keep off the front pages. Hard-left Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, she said, would "outsource our conscience to the Kremlin".

Although some polls have shown increasing Republican enthusiasm ahead of the November midterm elections that will determine control of Congress, Kavanaugh's support among voters as a whole is historically low.

The FBI report did little to alleviate a bitter partisan fight over Kavanaugh's nomination.

Another, Republican Lisa Murkowski, said she had not made up her mind on her final vote but suggested she might oppose Mr Kavanaugh.

"Believe me I struggled with it for a long time", Collins said after her speech.

The White House ordered a supplemental Federal Bureau of Investigation background check after a handful of Republicans threatened to withhold their support from Kavanaugh, and senators began reviewing the confidential report on Thursday.

Moments after Collins finished talking, the only remaining undeclared lawmaker, Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia, said he, too, would vote "yes" in the showdown confirmation roll call expected Saturday afternoon.

Kavanaugh's confirmation hinges on the votes of some other key moderate senators including Sen. Collins and Flake both said the investigation was thorough.

"We have to think about what it would mean if Judge Kavanaugh were to be confirmed to the Supreme Court with credible sexual assault allegations against him", Durbin said from the Senate floor on Friday.

But Democrats, including ranking member Rep. But she said that none of the four witnesses who Ford said were present could remember any such event.

The FBI also apparently did not interview Kavanaugh.

It's not a huge surprise that Manchin voted for Trump's nominee considering he's running for reelection in a state the president won by almost 42 percentage points over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.

Dershowitz called the outrage against Kavanaugh an attempt to "punish and get even with" a judicial nominee who has received the backing of the Senate. That's never happened in a Supreme Court confirmation.

At the September 27 Senate hearing into Ford's allegations against Kavanaugh, he fought back with a blistering partisan attack in which he described the allegations against him as a "calculated and orchestrated political hit" masterminded by the Democrats and left-wing groups.
