California Has Enacted the Country's Toughest Law to Protect Net Neutrality

Calif. Gov. Jerry Brown adopts its own net neutrality law prompting the Justice Department to sue the state in an effort to block what's describe as the

The Trump administration filed a lawsuit against the state of California on Sunday night in an effort to strike down its new net neutrality law, signed only hours earlier by Democratic Gov.

In rolling back net neutrality in December, the FCC also prohibited states from passing their own rules, as it would create a patchwork of laws throughout the country.

"I look forward to working with my colleagues and the Department of Justice to ensure the internet remains 'unfettered by federal or state regulation, ' as federal law requires, and the domain of engineers, entrepreneurs, and technologists, not lawyers and bureaucrats."

Ajit Pai, the Trump-appointed head of the FCC who was responsible for the repeal of these federal-level laws in June, reaffirmed the preemption of federal law against state regulation. Identifying the internet as a interstate information service, he said only the federal government can set policy for it.

They had cheered California's attempt to force the Obama-era rules back into effect through state legislation.

Jonathan Spalter, who heads USTelecom, an industry trade group, said California's law will not "help advance the promise and potential of California's innovation DNA". "California fought Trump and Sessions on their immigration lawsuit - California won - and California will fight this lawsuit as well", Wiener said in a statement.

Pai issued a statement after California's law passed, saying, "the law prohibits many free-data plans, which allows consumers to stream video, music, and the like exempt from any data limits".

California's net neutrality law may have been inspired by the problems they encountered during their horrific wildfires this summer.

State Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson, the Santa Barbara Democrat who authored the bill, says having more women on boards will make companies more successful because they are better at teamwork and multitasking compared to their male counterparts.

"Rather than 50 states stepping in with their own conflicting open internet solutions, we need Congress to step up with a national framework for the whole internet ecosystem and resolve this issue once and for all", the group said in a Sunday statement.

The California law would prevent Internet service providers from speeding up or slowing down access to certain types of content, or charging websites and apps to provide faster service.

After the governor's veto, Leyva said she will introduce the bill next session.
