Filipinos onboard Air Niugini safe after plane crash landed in Micronesia

U.S. Navy sailors helped rescue people from a crashed plane in Micronesia

The body of a passenger on a flight that crashed short of the runway on the tiny Pacific island nation of Micronesia last week has been discovered by divers, operator Air Niugini said on Monday in contrast to its initial report that all had survived.

According to USA Today, all passengers and crew evacuated the aircraft safely thanks to the quick response of local boats as well as US Navy Sailors who were working on a wharf nearby.

His age and nationality is unknown, but Air Niugini says it is working with local authorities, hospitals and investigators to try and find him.

The pictures of the plane resting in the water and boats rescuing passengers bring back memories of the "Miracle on the Hudson" in 2009, where U.S. Airways pilots successfully landed on the river after bird strikes knocked out both engines. "When the plane came to a stop all the civilian boats came to help transport passengers to dry land".

"Air Niugini advises that its Boeing 737-800 series aircraft, P2-PXE landed short of the runway whilst landing at Chuuk Island of the Federated States of Micronesia this morning". So far it appears none of the 47 people on board was killed, although one person was described by officials as in critical condition.

The nine Filipino seafarers who were onboard the Air Niugini plane that crash landed in Micronesia are all safe, the Philippine Consulate office in Guam said on Sunday. "I thought this is not the way it's supposed to happen".

FBI Reaches Out To Deborah Ramirez In Background Probe Of Kavanaugh Allegations
The FBI, however, can not force interviews in background check investigations, or in criminal investigations for that matter. Ramirez and she has agreed to cooperate with their investigation", Clune said in a tweet .

The cause of the crash and the exact sequence of events remains unclear.

Residents in small boats rushed to the crash site to save passengers and crew members from the sinking aircraft, an official said.

Passenger Bill Jaynes said the plane came in very low. "Until I looked over and saw a hole in the side of the plane and water was coming in". However, Jaynes said the only scenario he can imagine is that it hit the end of the runway and continued into the water.

He said the flight attendants were yelling, and he suffered a minor head injury.

Air Niugini, which has been established in 1973, is the flag carrier of Papua New Guinea.
